Default Grandma Remedies for Cold

I'm hearing more and more about the positive effects of Black Elderberry has on our immune system and how it helps boost our immune system. A friend of mine suggested I try Sambucol which is made from Black Elderberry. Not sure yet. Has anybody heard about it? Is it good? The irony is that Sambucol was created by a grandmother.
Thanks, Katie xxx.

I haven't heard about this....if you try it you'll have to let us know.

Someone on another board mentioned putting vicks on their (and their children's) feet for cough at night. Many swear by it.

It's funny what people do...and even funnier what works!

Good luck-I hope you get over your cold soon.

Katie, welcome to the board!

I have not heard anything about those 2 particular herbs.

#1 For all of us is lemons and oranges for vitamin C

#2 Chicken noodle soup

Just a quick overview of some others:

Garlic

Ginger

Ladies Fingers (I thought they meant the cookie, but no, it's an herb)

Bitter Gourd Roots

Tamarind and Pepper (from India)

Honey

Raspberry juice

Ointments with menthol, eucalyptus and camphor all help open blocked nasal passages

Zinc lozenges

Echinacea and goldenseal

Amino Acids, especially Lysine

Acidophilus

Slippery elm

Yarrow

Catnip

Sesame Oil

Honey

Peppers

Willow

Do they work? I am not a doctor or a pharmacist, so cannot advise.

Be very careful when mixing pharmacy medications, over the counter medications, and any herbal/home remedies.

Some mixtures can be harmful.

What are your thoughts?

Default it works

hey missychrissy, i have heard of using vicks rub, but never on feet! i suppose that's reflexology or something.
Well, i used the Sambucol after christmas when i felt like i might have been coming down with another cold (i hate rainy weather) and it did the trick! i didn't get ill and managed not to catch the bug going round the office as well. i will definitely carry on using it.

My mom swears by rubbing Vicks on the feet. I have no idea what that does but she swears it works.

Vicks on the feet?
My 5 month old has recently come down with a cold (from DH) and I think I might just give that a whirl with his Baby Vicks!

A good friend of mine recommended that I give my son a few drops of elderberry, and I consider her to be a great and reliable source for all the homeopathic stuff... but just to err on the side of caution, I actually take it myself in hopes it will pass through my breastmilk. (I take the recommended adult dosage of 30 drops.) If there it a remote chance it may be "questioned", I feel so much more at ease knowing it has to pass through me first. My husband and I call it "The Mommy Filtration System". I inevitably caught the dreaded cold from DH, too, and I honestly believe it has aided in at least lessening some of the nasty mucus congestion (sorry if that's TMI...) and overall I don't feel all too bad considering I DO still have a cold. In any case, it couldn't hurt. (Unless, as QueenAngie said, you are taking any other medications which might not be advisable to mix...)

What about Echinacea? I know that's also a hearty immune booster... Whole Food has a cocktail syrup with Elderberry, Echinacea, Vitamin C and Mullein, which I hear works wonders! I can't take it while breastfeeding because it also contains a bit of Thyme and Peppermint oil which might dry out my milk supply, but for anyone not BF, it's fantastic.

Sambucol has been a monthly deal at CVS for ECBs, so I purchased a couple.

I have a really bad sinus/bronchitis/asthma going on right now. Yesterday I tried some of the Sambucol. Not certain yet if it helps,
but it tastes good.

i like it too. it's not often that things which are good for you actually taste nice too, so that's a bonus!
