Default Great News!

Have some great news to share.
My 83 yo Mom is learning to read again!

Ya'll recall in Oct, 07 Mom had a severe stroke. We thought we'd lost her, but she rallied and is doing well at home with Dad.

She is continues home health visiting nurses with physical, occupational, and speech therapies at this time. That should end at the end of February, 08.

One of the things she lost was the ability to read and vision in her right eye. Most of her vision has returned. The stroke caused a loss of her ability to read also.

She has regained the ability to do numbers, and now she is relearning how to read. This past week she read a listing of items to me. She practices daily.

She is learning to rewrite her name, legibly.

Some oddities. On some good days, she can take 'dictation' and in cursive, write what you tell her to easily. It is easy to read. Yet, she cannot read back what she wrote.....or only a few words.

Mom started crying after she read to me on Thursday. Tears of joy.

She says that the good thing with the stroke, to look at her, she looks "normal." Her speech returned clearly (though sometimes she has trouble locating a specific word), her smile is even. She looks like Mom.

Got her hair permed last week and she looks beautiful!

Just had to share!

Oh Angie, now that just made my day! That is GREAT news!

I'm sure she would have never made it this far without her wonderful daughter by her side. Pat yourself on the back, then give your mom a great big hug and a congratulations from me!

You know that sparkle when your child reads words for the first time, slowly, but surely. My Mom has that same sparkle in her eyes when she reads.

I'm trying to locate some adult books that are for 1st time learning to read books for adults. I think that the "Cat in the Hat series," which my kids loved, would be too immature for Mom.

Any ideas?

Wonderful News!

Glad to hear she is doing so well. I remember when my grandfather was going through the same thing. I was 5 or 6 at the time so he learned to read again as I was learning to read for the first time. It made my mom's job easier as she was his caregiver at the time.

Awesome news!!! As for the reading, is there an English as a Second Language course around you, I know here they teach a lot of adults to read and they might have some materials that would be more mature, than Dr. Seuss or maybe they could give you some ideas. HTH. Have a great day!!!
