Default Grinding Teeth

Does anyone else grind their teeth?

I never thought this to be a problem till I began noticing my teeth getting lower and closer to my gums. I also found that when I grind my teeth, I begin to get horrible migraines.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? I was told to sleep at night with a mouth guard and let me tell you, it def helps. As far as breathing, it takes a little getting use to. I was using it for a while till one day I came home and my dog found it and she was chewing it!

That was the end of me using a mouth guard.

I think I must. I would have awlful dreams about my jaw stretching oposite directions horizontaly until I could feel the pain. It is believed after a stressful day I would clench down really tight and stress my jaw. Well, since having braces and funny rubberbands to extend my bite (inside top molars, extending to outside bottom ones so rubberband rests between my bite) I've been chewing on my bands in my sleep. My dh told me a couple nights ago it was the first time he's heard me grinding. My oldest son (4) has an awlful grinding habbit.

I found a few things to help teeth grinding.

While awake, realizing you are doing it helps a lot. I stop it by relaxing my entire bottom jaw by just letting it hang there; not contracting any muscles. I also breathe while doing it and it releases the tension in the jaw and neck.

When I'm sleeping, before I fall asleep, I do the same thing and sometimes wear a mouth guard.

I had orthodontics all throughout my life starting at age 8 with the widening of my jaw. I had the "seperator" twice and braces twice and now I have pernament retainer.

I find when I am most stressed, I begin to grind my teeth again and that a lot of it comes from stress. I was also told I have TMJ, which is basically cause from grinding my teeth causing pressure on my jaw.

Chiropractic care to adjust my neck and jaw also seemed to help A LOT!

Default Chiropractic care

You said it! I found out the same thing. My TMJ seemed to come from having surgery and having that breathing tube inserted. Anyway, after my operations I showed up with a "sprained jaw". The chiropractic care worked, but the mouth guard didn't -- I just chewed it up myself. What works for me is consciously dropping open my jaw a bit just before I go to sleep.

Default Bad dentistry -- crowns that don't fit

My husband had bad TMJ including bruises on his jaw line and near his eyes it was so bad. He changed dentists, far too late. Anway, after a whole reconstruction of every single crown put in his mouth, he is finally free! Be sure to tell your dentist if the crown feels high. And if they don't check your bite afterward, be very suspicious.

Default Grinding and Stress

Dentists will usually make up a splint for you to wear while you sleep to prevent nocturnal grinding. The long term solution to grinding, which is basically a sign of stress, is to determine what is causing the stress. Eventually the grinding will stop once the concern is addressed. Watch yourself during the day to check if you are clenching your teeth as well.

I still grind my teeth. Before I noticed this post, I realized I was doing it and stopped as this brought it to my attention. I've done it since I was a child. I can't honestly say that I *know* of any problems it has caused, but I wouldn't doubt that it hasn't helped upcoming problems.

Good advice and points. I heard stress has a lot to do with teeth grinding. My older son grinds his teeth, no doubt due to stress.
