Have you ever wondered what your ancestors or grandparents did?
I did and searched them up on this ancestry search engine on their 14 day trial package and found out my great grandparents were civil engineers and on my grandma's side a bank accountant. Some other interesting fact i found was that the Australian treasurers ancestors were fraudsters! so have you guys tried this?

My grandmother kept EVERYTHING. Literally. She was big into geneology and keeping the family line known. Which was awesome because I am heavily into knowing my past. I have confederate money from a great great uncle, claim tickets for loads of cotton, old tin type pictures, etc.
My great grandfather was a doctor and my great grandmother was a pharmicist. They lived in Dime Box, TX. It's neat knowing your past.

For some reason I have zero desire to know. I mean, I vaguely know both sides of my family are European and that's enough for me. I don't care what country, or what they did. Everyone seems so curious about it, and it makes me wonder why I'm not? Maybe it'll come to me later...
eta: I DO like hearing other people's stories though. Perhaps it's the fact that I don't want to do the actual work! lol

There is nothing on my family which originated in England. I am afraid to search and leave information at sites on the web.
I find other families' stories fascinating and it is great to give you a sense of ancestry. My adopted nephew knows all his birth family background as the social workers kept it all for him. Amazing!

yeah i agree....my family background is boring...the typical immigrant story. I enjoy reading about other families stories. Btw did anyone get a different story from the search engine compared to what they have been told by their parents?

I knew that my grandfather worked in a steel mill, but since he had a stroke when I was a baby, I never knew anything about it. I had pictures of him at work as a young man in his 20s, but I had no idea what it meant. One curious picture was of him with some men who were obviously owners and managers.
When I took his pocket watch to be appraised, I learned that it was a railroad watch, for precise timing of rail schedules, but also used in the steel industry in those days to time pouring slag. The watch would have been very expensive, so it was something he needed. So apparently he had something to do with being a foreman or in charge of something.
It is interesting when things help tell a story that their owners couldn't.

WOW! This is right up my alley....
This is my first time on families.com, and your post about questioning your ancestors really hit home for me!
My mother is adopted-she was given up at birth in 1952-closed adoption. We know nothing but my biological grandmother's maiden name and the town that she was from.
My mother has always had an ethnic appearance (as do I and my brothers) and has always been asked what her heritage is. A few months ago a coworker of my mother's asked this question, and when my mother replied that she was adopted and had no clue what her heritage was, the woman suggested what she believed Mom's heritage is, which led my mother (and me!) on a very exciting journey. Mom had DNA testing done that revealed her principle ancestory is Portuguese and Native American (Cherokee Indian)-these repeated themselves throughout her DNA..they didn't just appear once or twice, which suggests strong ancestory most likely on both her birth mother and birth father's side.
For the first time in 55 years, my mother has had a sense of identity and I feel more complete knowing what the "other half" of me is. Learning about our ancestors (especially the Cherokee) has been the most interesting, fun, and for lack of a better way of saying it, spiritual experience I've ever had.
I think it's wonderful that you were actually able to locate birth siblings and really enjoyed reading your post!

I come from parents whos families were both filled with teachers and nurses, recent generations the same, expanding to a few of the latest generation in law and medicine.I imagine my ancestors were in some form of service too and from the stories I hear they were! My older son is in medicine,my younger son is doing a degree in politics. His dream is to be an actor! He has had auditions for top drama schools in the UK.He has been told he has innate ability. Perhaps a new generation of thespians to add to the family. I hope so,my husband and I love the theatre! Both our sons are good actors , but we never thought one of them would like to take it up seriously!
