Aisha, congratulations on your courage! Ma sha Allah, I have so much respect for women who cover in this country. I know it takes such strength of character to have your faith on public display. Since I do not cover, I have no real advice to offer on this subject, but I think mcmama is correct. Many people assume a woman is forced to cover, that it's a man's way of holding her back or keeping her down. A short, simple answer affirming that it is your religious choice should satisfy the curious... and the cynical. With my daughters, I simply tell them that the hijab is a part of our God-ordered modesty. (Although I don't cover my hair, I do cover my body w/ long, long-sleeve shirts and long, loose skirts, so my kids are familiar w/ the Islamic need for modesty.) Best of luck and iman to you!
