Pictures of babies with smallpox
Ugh. So I am in school (done in May! yey) for Criminal Justice, and a class that I am taking is Homeland Defense. The textbook we use is incredibly insensitive and blunt, but I guess that's to be expected given the topic! Anyway, this week we are studying current Weapons of Mass Destruction, and one of them is a biological agent that spreads viruses like smallpox. I am particularly sensitive when it comes to suffering children, and our textbook shows a ton of pictures of BABIES and CHILDREN with smallpox, but no pictures of adults!! I know that it was more likely for children and babies to have smallpox, but that's not so anymore. And not to mention, really? Babies?? The authors could get their point across by showing pictures of adults with smallpox... the point of the pictures is to just show what a severely infected person looks like and how damaging (and fatal) it can be if infected.
I know this is kind of a stupid vent, but it seems like the authors really try to pinch the emotions by using a ton of examples and showing pictures of suffering children and babies instead of adults. Grr! The readers can get the point with examples of adults!!!
