I also get upset about the amount of paper and plastic goods that end up in the dump.
As a very frugal shopper, I think it is sad and funny at the same time, when people buy pre-washed vegetables. A store in FL sells 3 washed potatoes for $2.79. um, hello! You can get 10 pounds for that price! ugh! I think a lot of it comes down to people thinking they need the convenience. BUT what a lot of us forget is that what one person needs, for someone else it's just a nice to have. We can't assume that just because they have someone we don't need, doesn't mean that they don't need it.
When I visited my sister's house, it bugged me to no end, how the kids would leave things uneaten on their plates.
I guess that's it; I hate to see things wasted. Is that frugal, or just environmentally-friendly?

I think it's both frugal and environmentally friendly! Pre washed foods are a waste of money for me too. I would just wash them again anyway, since I'm not sure what is used and how they are washed. I saw a piece on CNN about the recent ecoli outbreak. They showed foods being given a "chemical wash"! No thanks! I try to keep chemicals AWAY from my family. I certainly don't want to pay double the price for foods bathed in chemicals! The thought turns my stomach!

The pre-washed vegetables always freak me out too....because I am convinced that they weren't washed right to begin with, so I have to do it again myself; which completely defeats the purpose!

I am guilty of buying/using paper towels, but it's mostly because I have 2 cats and a senile dog who can be prone to accidents. I live in an apartment building and bring my clothes to a laudromat when I have enough for a few loads......I wouldn't be able to deal with stinky rags sitting there for a long period of time. For that same reason I will be using disposable diapers even though I would prefer to use cloth.

My BIGGEST pet peeve are people using their car to go places that are walking distance. Other than the environmental impact, gas prices are enormous and in North America we already have an obesity problem. Why not kill two birds with one stone!

It kills me that we are going to have to trade in our small, good-on-gas Kia Spectra soon for a small SUV. I'm siding with Patti on this one- we are moving to the North (the Canadian North), to a city that is basically a basin built on rocks, and the road conditions in the winter are horrendous (icy, snow for over half the year, not the best road maintenance, etc). While our Spectra is fabulous for city driving, I don't think it will last too long in my hometown; not to mention we have outgrown it (baby on the way, 2 cats and a dog who frequently travel with us). My parents have discovered the hard way that living further north, if you have to cover a large area a smaller sedan just won't cut it . It also kills me that public transportation there is so horrendous- right now I pretty much take the bus everywhere.

I also cringe when I see people with brand name everything- yes, I will admit that for some things it makes a difference (shampoo and conditioner come to mind.....but I have difficult hair to begin with), but for god's sake, things like baking soda, pop, peanut butter, etc? Most of this stuff gets packaged in the exact same plant, only a different label is put on it. I am a HUGE fan of store brands.

Totally agreed--although I am lucky enough to live in a place where the public transportation system is very, very good. It does make it easy.

During the twins in between stage (where they're too little for me to really expect them to walk the distances necessary but too big to schlep in a stroller) I have been driving down town to classes. It nearly kills me to do it though.

Yes, I like store brands too, but if you watch the deals carefully, you can often combine double coupons with sales and rebates and take it away for next to nothing, or even be paid to take it away!

I thought when we moved to north NJ 20 years ago that I would do a lot of walking. The distance to the Pathmark is no different from distances that I walked with my sidewalk cart to grocery stores in Queens. But it is unwalkable. There are no sidewalks, the traffic is horrendous, and the place was just not designed for walking. So I always drove to a store that was literally around the corner and down the street.

Walking is not an option when your choices are traffic, mud, or side shoulders where you could break an ankle just with normal movement.

Walking isn't an option for us, either. We live in a very rural area with no sidewalks and the store isn't just down the road. But it's only a once a week trip, so it's not a big deal to drive it. I just have to make my list carefully so I don't forget anything! I wish we had public transportation, but I wouldn't want the congestion that comes with it. I like the fresh air!

You know it's a trade off. . .cloth diapers are not an option for us. . .and there were a few other things that were mentioned that we cannot consider bc of apartment living and/or just the logistics of being in the city. But we get the awesome public transportation. I have to say though. . .I'm a total city girl. I went to college in podunk and while it was okay and there were things I learned to appreciate I really like living in the city.

Yeah, I can't do cloth either. In theory, I love the idea for the environmental impact. However, I can't take anymore laundry. I have enough keeping up with laundry for six people and working from home. I'm lucky to get the regular wash done!

My pet peeve is when my kids are given cheap plastic toys that break within the week. Most of the time, a nice book costs less and will last a lot longer.

I'm a diet soda addict. And with rising food costs this is not a cheap addiction to have but I do always look for the best deals and will even buy generic "Diet Cola" when nothing else is on sale. So while I have no room to talk here, it does drive me nuts when people buy 20oz. bottles of soda. On average they cost about $1.30 where I'm from...for$1.50 at the most you can buy a two liter bottle! And cases of cans can be even cheaper if you find the right sales!
