Default How do I start?

We've decided that after the holidays (and road trips to visit our families) are over, we're going to start working on potty training DS. He's 2 yrs, 3 months right now.

Last Feb. (at about 18 months) he started telling us when he was wet and taking off his diaper if he was wet or dirty. I bought a potty seat for the toilet and started sitting him on it a few times a day. At first he was great about sitting on it for awhile, but then he lost interest. I followed his lead and stopped mentioning using the potty, but if he did I sat him on it.

Well . . .here we are almost a year later and he's never done anything in the toilet (once he told DH he was "yucky", but when DH checked his diaper it was empty. 5 minutes later he'd poo'd in it. "Potty" to him now pretty much just means sitting on the toilet, grabbing TP, wiping himself, flushing, and washing his hands. He's watched DH enough to know the "routine", but hasn't done anything in the toilet, yet.

Any suggestions on how to start?

I just ask when I need to go, ask if they want to go too. If they say no, ok, that's fine. When you go you might come back with a sticker, special stickers for who ever goes on the potty.

Lots of crackers---and then juice. The crackers will make them want to drink more and then the obvious.....Start talking about it...after Santa comes....we are going to go on the potty. Maybe write him a note from Santa encouraging him to go on the potty.....make the potty time a reward with stickers on a paper taped to the bathroom door. Once you start stay off the diapers---cut off liquids early in the night before bed. If you go back and forth between undies and a diaper he will get confused. Good Luck---it is always fun!

If you can, I'd get a portable potty chair to keep out in the area he spends most his time. We've done that with Conner, and in the evening we can take his diaper off and he'll use it!! But only if the little potty is right there, unfortunately, which is why he isn't fully potty trained yet. He doesn't tell us when he has to go.
