I've found that a physical book works best. Even better if you use your finger as a pointer and run it along the words as you read them, so that your child learns which word you are sounding out. This is really really effective to teach them to connect letters with sounds and learn to read -- we've had one hundred per cent good results so far! ;)

I'd recommend the SAD MAD GLAD book series! Simply titled The Sad Mad Glad Book and Another Sad Mad Glad Book, their subtitle is The Anatomy of Your Attitude. When you or your children read it, it does a fantastic job of incorporating bright, colorful pictures with sayings and idioms that I grew up with. It is simply written, but the pages are excellent for asking questions and starting discussions. Younger children will really like the photos. Like the ones of the dolphins, the hippo, some chicken having a really bad hair day, and plenty of ones with kids. These books aren't small, either. They are over 100 pages so you get your money's worth! Usually, you can read about six to ten pages at a time because as you read, you can ask real good questions and talk/ask about feelings and thoughts. I was surprised at what you'll hear back! There's a third book, a secular book, called The Sad Mad Glad Christian I haven't read that one, but it deals with faith-based topics. I found these on www.sadmadgladbooks.com. There, it also says their books are available on Barnes & Noble and Amazon. These are going to make excellent Christmas presents for my young relatives!

Our 4 yr old daughter loves for us to read in bed to her every night. She loves big colorful pictures with short to the point sentences or paragraphs below them. Much like the Dr. Seuss books....
