Default How long is too long to be sick?

How long is too long for an infant (5 months) to have a cold? How about a flu? Devon has has a cold for over a week now, and today it seems as though he is coming down with the flu. He has been throwing up and totally miserable. I feel so horrible for him. He won't sleep, and just a bit ago when he did finally fall asleep, he suddenly started throwing up (while sleeping!!!).

I'm not sure what to do. Do I call the doctor? He is supposed to go to daycare tomorrow. Do I send him, or keep him home? Is this the flu?

i was always told if it's longer than days to call a doctor. i wouldn't take him to daycare to prevent other kids from getting whatever he has. let us know what the doctor says!

LoL! Yeah, he won't be going to daycare. I don't even know why I added that. I guess somewhere in the back of my mind I was hoping that he will be better by tomorrow and can go, but I'm not holding my breath! I realize how silly I sounded!

I think I will be calling the doctor tomorrow. The flu can be so harmful to little babies. Even though he isn't really a newborn anymore, I feel like he is still to little to ride this out, ya know? I feel so bad for him.

Definetely call the DR - it's RSV season and that's nothing to play around with.

normally a cold should only last for one week, if it last longe could be something else i think to put your mind at ease maybe you should, bring to the doctor.

I agree with jkl... They just tested my daughter for RSV, which can last for 10 days.

Both Pipps and Jamie's colds as babies would last two-three weeks.

We took Devon to the doctor today. He spent the entire night throwing up, and he wouldn't eat. I snuggled with him in bed the entire night and he would wake and fuss but refused to eat. I felt horrible for him, and he continued to throw up this morning, and now it's accompanied by some runny poop! Great.

He has the flu and he also has an ear infection in his right ear, and he has RSV, too. The green junk in his nose and throat and lungs. So sad. No wonder why he was so miserable last night! Ear infections suck, and he can hardly breathe without whooping. He was prescribed an antibiotic, but we can't give it to him until he stops throwing up. I have been at class all day and DH has been at home with him. I've called a couple of times, and he's still throwing up. We may be bringing him to the ER at the Children's Hospital in Minneapolis later, if he doesn't settle down with the vomit. Doc says if he can't keep anything down for 4-6 hours, and we can't give him the antibiotic, better be safe than sorry and bring him in to avoid (or help with) dehydration.

Does anyone know anything about pneumonia or bronchitis? Can you still get pneumonia even after having the shot? Would they have known that it could turn into pneumonia by this point? I have never known anyone with it, really, and have no knowledge or experience with it. I know that Devon isn't really a newborn anymore, but he is still so young that this kind of stuff scares me.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I hope he feels better soon. James has been sick on and off since October. We are on our third ear infection, and they are just horrible at this age since they can't tell you what's going on.

I hope you do take him to the hospital, this way they can keep him hydrated and give him is meds through an IV and maybe he will start feeling better.

Keep us posted.
