How many school lunch choices?
Students typically have several choices for school lunch. In this article I detail how one school district is cutting elementary students back to one choice. How many choices do think your child needs?

DD's elementary school offers 3 daily choices. They have lunch A which is usually what you would expect in a typical school lunch on any given day. Lunch B is a salad and fruit platter and lunch C is peanut butter & jelly, carrot/celery sticks and fruit cup.
I do like the fact that they have choices because DD does not always like what is being served in lunch A. I would rather her have an option that she will eat so I know she had lunch and it was nutritious.

At our school everyday there are at least two different types of veg, mash potato's, chips, pasta, curry, salad, fruit and sweeets, baked beans then a daily special. You just pick as many bits as you want, there are no set meals. I have never known a primary school to offer food at all.

Here the majority of elementary schools don't offer lunch- everyone brown bags it (with the exception of the occasional pizza day).
I prefer it this way- I was an extremely picky eater (still am), and likely would not have had an option I would tolerate. I'm also not a huge fan of processed food for children, so when Norah's older chances are she'll be brown-bagging it too

Wow! I never knew things were so different in other places! My school actually offers about five or six chocies! We typically have a hot dog, hamburger, grilled chicken sand. and pb&j everyday. Then two chocies that different. I have some kids that pretty much eat a hot dog everyday!

Our kids have one choice and I am fine with that. Typically, they only like the hot lunch one or two days each week because they tend to be picky. The other days, I pack their lunches. I think one choice is enough. That's what lunch boxes are for.

I much prefer our system in Australia where we send our kids with their own lunches from home or they can buy from the canteen. Although at the moment, our canteen isn't open

I'm in Australia too, our canteen is on the healthy food guidelines now, which means evrything is low or no fat, you order in the morning and it arrives in a basket at big luch, things like chicken sticks and rice or lamb wraps.really nothing like what I have seen on tv as an american cafteria

Are the meals expensive at the canteen?

In the UK school dinners now work out more expensive than a packed lunch, and I don't think they're very good either - chips are an option most days, and the deserts are sugary and quite large helpings. We do a packed lunch here - partly for the price, and partly because it means we know what she's eating is decent.
