How much did your preemie weigh?
Hi Michele, Thanks for the welcome.
Our little fella is doing really well considering the obstacles he's been facing. It was an extremely difficult pregnancy. I bled heavily (soaking 2-4 maternity pads an hour most days) from week 5 until week 21. Then I sprung a slow leak in the amniotic sac at week 19 (apparently the heavy bleeding weakened the cell walls of the sac) and then completely ruptured the membrane at week 24 and started to go into labour. I was hospitalised when my sac completely ruptured and placed on total bed rest. Thankfully it didn't progress into full labour and we were given another few weeks with him in my tum. He had an infection at birth - which is most likely why labour commenced again at the 29wk mark. We've been able to knock that on its head pretty quickly with antibiotics. Due to him not having enough amniotic fluid from 19 weeks (and none of any significance from 24 weeks), our boy came out with lungs the size and strength of a 20wk baby. They were really dry from not enough fluid etc. He's on high frequency ventilation - and the Neo-natologists are hoping to stretch some extra capacity out of them. He has had a minor bleed to the brain (grade 2) - which thankfully has not progressed further for the past few days. Also has a hole in his heart which seems to be getting a little bigger over time - but the docs aren't to concerned by this. I had placenta issues (explains the bleeding) - with only about 10% of the placenta functioning at the time he was born. Poor little fella was growth restricted while relying on the placenta. So he's definitely one of those bubs who were "better out than in" at the time they are born.
