I am often frusterated when I go to see a movie without asking someone I know and trust what they thought about the movie. Often times the movie has a great trailer but is filled with filth. The movie ratings just don't cut it anymore. Too much stuff slips by with a PG-13 rating.
I am always on the look out for resources that I feel will give me a heads up about a movie. I found these websites very helpful:
Kids-In-Mind assigns each movie a rating from 1 to 10 in three categories: Sex & Nudity, Violence & Gore, and Profanity. Not only that, but they give a complete run down of what is offensive in each of these areas. It is taken from the perspective of a parent screening the film for their kids. From this you can have the heads up of exactly what content is in the movie. (While the ads are annonying, the content is all free.)
Screen It! also rates movies similarly with a scale of None, Minor, Moderate, Heavy and Extreme in 15 different categories: Alcohol/Drugs, Blood/Gore, Disrespectful/Bad Attitude, Frightening/Tense Scenes, Guns/Weapons, Imitative Behavior, Jump Scenes, Music (Scary/Tense), Music (Inappropriate), Profanity, Sex/Nudity, Smoking, Tense Family Scenes, Topics To Talk About, Violence. The site much more detailed then Kids-In-Mind but it is more difficult to navigate. On the homepage just scroll down to the bottom and click "No Thanks" in order to get to the free section.
Hope these are useful to someone!
Thanks,
Dean
