Default How well do fabric markers work?

I am thinking about making a version of a 100 Memories quilt. Basically, my plan is to give squares of fabric to our friends and family who are helping us with the adoption and ask them to put a wish or a prayer or a quote for our baby on the square. Then, I'll make them into a quilt. The thing is, not everyone on my list can sew and even the ones who can may not take the time to. If I have people write their wishes with fabric markers, how well will that work? I will probably hang the quilt on a wall, so it's not as if it would go through normal wear and tear, but if the writing is going to rub off then that would be awful since so many people put work into it.

Any ideas you crafty people might have would be great. Thanks!

To save yourself some trouble down the road, once you have found the right kind of marker, I would hand out the fabric swatches along with the markers to your family and friends.

That's a good idea. My mom also suggested that I should try that paper that you can print on and then iron it on your fabric to transfer it. I'm not sure what it's called, but I think that might work too.

Default not totally permanent

There is no type of marker that I know of that is totally permanent. My toddler actually used a fabric marker to scribble on the couch! I was able to get it out by using hairspray. So, even those markers can come out of fabric. If you are just planning on using the quilt as a decoration and keepsake (instead of letting your son use it) then fabric markers should be just fine. If the baby is going to use it, it will need to be washed often and would probably fade.
