Default HUGE Cat and Dog Food Recall

I figured for sure this would already be posted here, but I couldn't find anything. If this is a repost and I missed it, MODS feel free to delete.

So, in case someone here doesn't know, there has been a huge pet food recall affecting over 80 brands of cat and dog food. Many cats and dogs have experienced liver and kidney failure, and many have died.

Here's one link to CNN. (I have this and more information on my blog.)
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/17/pet....ap/index.html

This is so heartbreaking, especially since it is now being reported that the company knew about this on February 20th , a full month ago. I read every article I could find today, and found dozens of different people posting comments about how they or someone they know lost one or more pets in the past month alone. It's just horrifying.
I've dedicated my time and my blog this week to keeping up with the information, you can find it at playingbig.blogspot.com/ MODS - if blog link isn't allowed go ahead and delete...

I hope all your pets are healthy and unaffected by this...

I heard about that! How awful! I'm thanking the Good Lord today that my cats do not eat any of the stuff recalled.

I don't understand how in the world they can't figure out what the problem is. Pet owners want to know!

Thanks for posting. I'm sure this info will help some people out.

A quick update: While it's not yet on the recall list, therefore this is 'anecdotal' - there are numerous reports that pets are getting sick and dying from Iams DRY food. The FDA in both California and Florida told callers that they have taken reports of the IAMS DRY food causing deaths.

The http://www.petconnection.com/blog/ site is maintaining a database and asking everyone with a sick or dead pet to fill out the information. There are over 1,000 reported deaths at that site as of a few hours ago.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

(I have a bunch of the latest information and links on my blog at www.playingbig.blogspot.com. A couple of other great blogs with most of the information are http://www.howl911.com and http://www.itchmo.com/go/tagged/safety/

For a list that will scare the everything out of you, go here to see all the foods that are made by Menu Foods. Even some of the highest end foods have some food made by Menu Foods. Very few don't. You'll see the ones that don't on this list too. http://petsitusa.com/blog/?p=210

Several Class Action lawsuits have been filed, a Yahoo Group has been set up, and the major news agencies are finally beginning to report the real numbers and implications. It's horrifiying.

Geez, I guess our pets are safer if we just let them out the door to hunt their own food!

Default More than just the recall list

My cat food was also not on the list and I was thrilled. I found a great resource PetStyle.com, it has links to the most up to date information. PetStyle cautions pet owners to be on the watch for signs of renal failure in their cats ad dogs including, an increase in water intake, increased urination, decreased appetite, lethargy and vomiting. Pets exhibiting any or all these signs should see a veterinarian immediately.

There is also information from a number of vets. The recall has inspired some pet owners to try their hand at creating their own pet food. Dr. Kidd of PetStyle.com recommends home cooking and providing your pet human-grade food. If you chose this route, the basic formula is one third meat, one third grain and one third vegetable to create a healthy balanced diet for your pet. There are more great tips
so check the list out and other great information. http://petstyle.com/news_ent_article.aspx?id=361
