Unhappy Hypoglycemic...

Well, I have some strange new things going on that I didn't experience with my first pregnancy. A couple of weeks ago a passed out while cooking breakfast. Everything went black and I had just enough time to call for my husband and he cought me. That hasn't happened since, but about half way through my morning routine I start to feel the same way. I am always fine after I eat breakfast. Well, I metioned all this at my OB appt and my doctor checked my blood sugar which he suspected to be high. It was 70 and he said that normal for that time of day would be between 130-150!! So, he gave me a modified diet and I have to go in for the glucose test next Thursday. He said as long as I eat at the very least 1,500 calories a day then there is no threat to the baby (trust me 1,500 calories is not a problem for me! lol ). The sad part is that he says hypoglycemia in pregnancy is a good indicator that I'll have problems with diabetes in my mid 40s!! Great! Just the news I wanted to hear (sarcasm of course).

Has anyone experienced this? What should I expect as I get further along in my pregnancy? Thanks.

I am hypoglycemic and have been since I was a teenager. Basically, the way it was explained to me is that our bodies use insulin and sugar faster then the average person. My pregnancy makes the side affects worse, as it does with everything else. So I get more headaches, lightheadness, and feeling faint. I need more sugar.
Basically, this is what I have to do. I am suppose to eat 6-8 times a day. Small meals and snacks. I have never worried about calories because I always eat too many anyway. The snacks should be things like fruit, cheese and crackers, not a lot of junk food. I also have to always have something to snack on with me, in case my sugar drops while I am running errands. I always have a juice or candy in my bag. I have had a few close calls, where I didn't and couldn't get something immediately, and almost passed out.
I have found, and of course each body is different, if I stay away from sugar, my sugar levels tend to level out. If I go through a phase when I eat a lot of candy, like around the holidays, when I don't eat it, I go through a week or two of crazy sugar highs and lows. The doctor told me that if I stay away from lots of sugar, diabeties should not be a problem later. It also makes us crave carbohydrates. Which is terrible while I am pregnant. Towards the end of my last pregnancy and at times during this one, I would eat a meal that did not have enough sugar, and I would have to eat something with sugar afterwards because the meal did not increase my sugar level enough. I would still feel yucky. Bacon and eggs with milk doesn't have enough sugar for me. If I add OJ or jelly toast, I am ok.

I had a terrible time during the first tri-mester. My sugars would hit lows even though I just ate. Now that I am towards the end of the second, they seem to have leveled out quite a bit. I think it had to do with the hormones that give us morning sickness. So you should start to feel better as you progress.

What type of diet did your doc put you on? I would love to know since, my docs never made a big deal out of it. They always told me to eat more.

Good luck with the pregnancy. For me this has been an easy side affect to mange. We get to eat more and have an excuse!!! Don't worry about the diabetes stuff till later just enjoy the pregnancy now.

I get like that I get all shaky and dizzy when I don't eat. Make Sure you always take a snack with you when you go out. And always eat. I've never heard of being on a 'special' diet for it either. I just make sure I eat when I'm hungry and when I have symptoms.

i had a whole post to help you, but then my 9 month old monster got ahold of my mouse. lol

the jist of things -- i've been hypoglycemic forever, it's pretty easy to maintain. the hardest thing for me is to remember to slow down & eat. try to keep a snack in your purse. since you seem to have your episodes in the AM, grab something little to eat, then continue your routine & cook breakfast.

Crazy, I had fainting spells too but i dont think it involves the same problem, all the dr could rule out is that my bp is lower than usual. I get headaches and lots of dizzy spells still, and he says its "normal"

I wish I was able to help you out tho, but i clearly dont have anything wrong with my blood sugars, that I know of
