I need Advice...Fast!
Hey everyone! I need advice! My daughter is just about three months old. She has always thrown up a lot (more than just spit up). We brought her in to Urgent Care and to the Doc for this problem a couple of times, and we always hear something different! At one point we were prescribed baby Zantac for reflux. We gave her the Zantac religiously, exactly at the times every day that it was supposed to be given. It was a waste of $50. Another time we brought her to the ER in fear that she was getting dehydrated, but tests reveal that she wasn't. The doctor spent an entire two minutes on us, and told us she had the stomach flu. If she did, then she's had it for about 6 weeks now! Poor girl has literally been sick for almost all of her life! So far she has seen her pediatrician, an Urgent Care Specialist, and some doc in the ER, and no one has been able to help us!
My mom has tried to be helpful by giving us her input. She mentioned to try burping her with every ounce instead of just twice a feeding. That didn't work. We bought the popular gas medicine (Mylicon) as well as some expensive stuff off the internet (Baby's Bliss), and both worked for gas, but neither helped with the throwing up! She throws up at least 4 times a day, and I'm talking projectile! Sometimes chunky (when all she eats is formula??) and sometimes runny! Lately, about the last 3-4 days she has also had diarreha, too! Now I'm getting worried. Something has to be done!
We have a doc appt for her tomorrow, and I'm curious as to what we'll hear this time! I'm just wondering if anyone has had a simliar problem... I think I just need to hear that this is normal??? I know that babies spit up a lot, but this is total projectile accompanied by severe discomfort at all times of the day for my poor angel. Help!
Thanks!

The poor little dear! Poor you too!
I'm no doctor, so until your appt, this is the best advice I have. It worked for my cousins baby when she was going through the same thing. First off-how much and how often do you feed her? My cousin was doing four oz every four hours, and I advised to try 3 every 3 or 2 every 2, until she isn't spitting up her meal. Spit-up is extra "overflow". Secondly, try adding some rice cereal to her bottle. It will help her hold it down. That really helps I swear. You may have to go up a level on the nipple so the rice cereal will get through. I had to use level two on my doctor brown bottles (I swear by those, even though its more little parts to wash-oh well). Too many of those gas drops will hurt her belly, so be careful she only gets them like twice a day.
Hope that helps. The rice cereal should also help the diarrhea.
Hope y'all get to feeling better soon.
And welcome to Families!

My SIL had the same problem with her now 19mnth old, when he was a baby.
It turned out he was lactose intolerant...he would "puke" everytime he ate, was a very crabby baby due to his tummy being upset all the time.
Are you BF or formula...I ask as Breast milk has lactose in it. There are certain formulas that are lactose free if you are forumla feeding. I would suggest asking your doc about this at your appoint. Once my SIL son was put onto soyformula he was a much happier baby...he also started to gain weight.
I hope this helps and your doc can help you out so your babe feels better.
HugZ to the both of you

My daughter spit up (but it was more than spit up) until she was 6 months old and on rice cereal regularly. It wasn't always projectile, but there were times when it was. Most of the time it was just alot! I didn't think she was keeping anything down. The doc. told me that it may look like alot of vomit, but probly isn't. (Thats not how I felt when it was all over me and her everything near us!) But she must have getting enough to eat because she gained weight. I nursed her for 3 months and then formula fed and it happened with both. Try switching bottles, maybe she is a super sucker and just eating too fast. I think thats what was Kaleigh's problem. The doctors just told me that they're little esophogus isn't developed enough to stay closed when its suppose to. We also tried frequent burping, gas drops, and such and nothing really worked, she just had to outgrow it. I hope things get better soon for you and your daughter.

Good point Lessly- I forgot- I did switch Kaleigh to a lactose-free formula (it wasn't soy though) which did make the vomiting less- but didn't take it away entirely.

I feel for you! My ds has always had a very sensitive stomach. I would try the formula switch to lactose free. I think there even be a sensitive stomach formula out there. Try changing the nipple on the bottle to a very slow flow, and even though it may be hard stop for a while in between the first 1/2 of the bottle and the second it will give her the extra time to digest. As far a diarrhea goes to this day my son still has a sensitive stomach and poo's @ 3x a day at 4 y/o. When his stomach use to get really hard from the gas we would wet the end of our finger and put salt on the end and let him such it off. Don't ask why but someone had told me this one night in a hotel when we were on vacation when everything else was closed and it worked for the gas.
There could also be something wrong with her digestive track. This is very uncommon and if she is gaining weight I wouldn't think that this is the case.
Don't ever forget if your not happy with your pediatrician your not married to him/her. You can fire them and find someone who will bring you more comfort to your babies discomfort. Your baby will see her pediatrician for many years to come and you need to be happy with them.

My first suggestion was to not feed her as much. Kaylee used to throw up as well. Then we stopped feeding her as much and that stopped.
Second would be to ask to switch to lactose free or soy formula.
Burping every ounce is a good idea but I found too that it never worked but that's cause I was feeding her too much.
Also what type of nipple are you using? Perhaps it's flowing too fast?
On a side note spit up can be chucky. It's weird but it does do that. But that also suggests to me that perhaps she's getting too much since when she does throw up obviously she has stuff in her stomach still.

i agree with the other ladies. i suspect that it is the milk. my mother had that problem with my brother, she said she had to just try different formulas until she found one that worked for his body.
once she found "the right" milk for him, he stopped throwing up.
good luck!

Thanks, everyone, for all your input! I have tried all sorts of bottles; slow ones- level one and two, vented ones, non-vented ones. I did breast feeding for only a month, and the doc suggested that I switch to soy formula due to the throwing up all the time. That didn't really help much.. just made stinky farts and puke that stained! LoL! I also tried feeding her less, less often, and less more often. Doc said that burping her so much may cause her tummy to become upset (from too many up and down movements). We saw the doc today. He said what she's going through is normal, believe it or not! Guess that just goes to show that I'm a first-timer in the parental dept! I would have never thought that this was normal! He did say that she probably had some sort of the flu, but that it can just last up to 10 days, since their little bodies aren't used to having sicknesses. I guess that makes sense because she's had this for about a week, and it's just starting to go away! I have noticed a difference. He also mentioned that she probably won't get over the throwing up thing for another month or two, since that's just what babies do! So that is good news, I guess! She is gaining weight and getting bigger, so she isn't throwing up everything!
Sad news is that she just had her shots yesterday at the doc, too. What a sad day!
