Tubes were the perfect answer for us. My little guy had them put in at 18 months. He had his tonsils taken out at the same time. He was constantly sick and had earaches. They weren't sure which was making him more sick. So they gave him the surgery and he has been great since. He still gets colds but now they are once every six months or so. More like a normal kid. He has had them in for 16 months now (if my math is correct) and they are still in place. We were told they would fall out on their own within 6 months, but they are still set strong. I have heard of people having the surgery several times because of blockage and falling out.
When he got them and got better, he started talking more clearly. We figured this was because his head was in a fog before tubes like when we have a stuffed head. He is very sensitive to loud noises. I think everything is amplified now. As he gets older, he is not as sensitive. But when he first got them, a loud tv or radio would bother him.
For the surgery day, consider getting him a new toy. Something small and quiet like a car or stuffed animal. It will help distract him and pass the time. He will be cranky and anxious after the surgery.
Good luck with the surgery. I hope everything goes well and your little guy recovers quick.
