Default I'm confused

I went to CVS to partake of the toothpaste deal (Colgate Total for $2.99/limit 5). I brought my 5 toothpastes up and the cashier told me that I would only get my $2.99 rebate coupon back for one toothpaste. What gives? It says "limit 5 per card number" on the ad, but they said the register would only print for one toothpaste.

TIA,
Quasi

Did they say you would only get one coupon or one for 2.99? You can buy 5 at the same time and it will print an ECB for all of them, but it will only be one coupon. You would get one for $14.95. Have one in my purse right now. If they told you would only get one for 2.99 if you bought multiple toothpastes, they were wrong.

That *is* what they told me, that my coupon would only be for $2.99. I have a mind to call the manager. I wonder if I went back and bought the other 4, if it would give me the rebate coupon for $11.96? Or have a lost out on this one?

EDIT: I made my phone call to the manager, and he assured me that it's fine, I can come back in and get my toothpaste. He apologized for his relatively new staff and promised to let them know that this is fine, and not to be telling the customers incorrect information. I'm stoked! I was getting concerned that I would be able to get the deals that the paper promises! Thanks mom2mirankier!

You'll get the other amount if you buy four more. You have all month to buy them. You can get them one by one or all in on transaction. You'll get 2.99 per one bought until you've reached your limit of 5.

Ok that's great. I edited my post above, in case you didn't see it. Thanks so much for explaining this to me.

Default Am I the only one to do it this way?

When there's a "limit 5" or "limit 3" of anything, I take my five to the register and have them ring ONE. Use my closest matching ECB, pay the rest with a CVS gift card from transferring a Rx. My ECB for that ONE prints out. Ring the next ONE, use the previous ECB to pay for it. Nothing due. ECB prints out. Ring the next one, etc, etc, etc. High value ECBs are hard to redeem. Why not just ring each toothpaste separately in one visit?
Last trip, walked out with ten toothpastes (across my card and hubby's), for less than ten cents OOP. All get donated to the women's shelter. For me, I'm increasing my quarterly spending rebates (tripled now).
Happy shopping.

sarivers - I've certainly done it that way before. But if there's a coupon, like with the Colgate, then that's not as helpful b/c each time, you'd have a $2.99 EB but only $1.99-$2.24 (depending on coupon) worth of product. So then you'd need fillers.

High values can sometimes be hard to redeem, but they can sometimes be a blessing when you want to use a $5/$30 or whatever but don't want to have to use 7 different EB to pay at the end!
