Default input needed.....

Tonight I stopped in my local CVS to use up some ECB. (I have 20+ ECB and have to spend them down so I'm not hitting this 10 active limit thing.) I picked up a few items including the BOGO Arm & Hammer & some tictacs.
The cashier tells me the total and we start scanning ECB which was around $30. Finally the total is below $2 and I get out my debit card to pay. I look at the screen and I notice the total drops to negative 8.43. I thought she had hit the total key when she first gave me the total. Instead she hit it after I gave her the ECB. (I know...shame on me for not watching better but I was trying to be quick cause the store was crazy.)
The cashier then adds a non taxable item to the order in the amount of $8.43 to made the total zero out. I didn't know she did it until the receipt printed. So essentially she put through $8.43 of merchandise on my order that I didn't receive or actually purchase. Make sense?
Is there anything I can do to reclaimed the ECB I was shorted? I would prefer not to ruffle the feathers of anyone at the store if possible. Can customer service assist me in any way?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Catherine
