Question Is it true that...

second babies often weigh more than your firstborn? It seems like everyone I've talked to lately has had their 2nd baby weigh quite a bit more than the first. Just wondering if I should expect a bigger baby this time around?! They haven't really given me an idea at the dr as to how big she will be so I don't know what to expect.

I've heard this from people, but I'm not sure it's really true. My older brother and I weighed the exact same (except I was 3 inches shorter! )

Also, when the doctors give you an idea it really is just an estimate. I had two different doctors say that DD was close to 7 1/2 lbs. She was born 5 1/2 lbs. My doctor said that he usually doesn't say how much he thinks it is because it really is just a guess.

I think people forget various factors that may make the statement true for them. For example, my son (#2) was almost 9 pounds while my daughter (#1) was 6 pounds 5 ounces. So I could say--'oh yeah, that was true for me!' BUT, dd was born at 39 weeks while ds was born at 42 weeks. Boys tend to be bigger and those 3 extra weeks do make a big difference! For me dd #3 was about the same size (and about the same gestational age) as ds and the twins were big for twins. . .

I will say that my pushing times were cut almost in half at each birth despite size differences and I only pushed about 20 min. for dd#1 so by the time I got to the first twin she just kind of flew out!

I was born 3 days after due date and was 5 lbs 6 oz. My younger sister was born 10 days before due date and was 8 lbs 8 oz. Hmmmmmm.

All I can say is that I was the larger baby outta my sis bro and I... I was the heaviest and longest... Luckily I was under 8 pounds and only 2 and a half hours for labour!

With my boys, they were born within days of their due dates so there wasn't really a time difference. My first born was 8 lb 7oz and my second was 7 lb 14 oz. So clearly in my case that did not apply.

Not always true, Melissa. I was 7lbs 5 oz, my younger sister was 6 lbs 4 oz, and my youngest sister was the same as me. Even with my two girls, Heike was 7lbs 15 oz, and Amber was 7 lbs 12 oz. (Not a huge difference, but still lighter!)

I noticed that Amber still had lots of movements near the end, when Heike didn't. I guessed that Amber would be a smaller baby (she was also almost 2 inches shorter).

It wasn't true with my kids. Catherine was 8lbs. 9oz. when she was born and Daniel was 7lbs. 15oz., so my second baby was smaller than my first.

My daughter was HUGE...(8'11) and my son was barely 7 pounds. Ironically, he is going to pass her up soon (he's younger). They are 15 months apart.
