Question Is Vicks safe?

Nevy has a bad cold...AGAIN!

Last night she woke up at 12:30am screaming b/c she could not breath! She never wakes up at night unless she's sick. So I knew something was up. I went in there and sure enough her nose was really stuffy and runny. I tried the "little noses" saline spray and the nose sucker (from birth ) and she still couldn't breath. I have the Johnson's infant vapor bath and that usually works right away but about 30mins out of the tub she is stuffy again. So last night I put a little Vicks Vapor Rub on her chest and right away she was feeling better and could sleep(after 2 hrs of screaming all night)! So this morning I was going to put it on her again and noticed the warning lable. It says ask a Dr. for kids under 2 years old. I was going to call her Dr. today and ask but I forgot to! Now its bedtime and I wanted to rub some on her. Do you think its safe? Has anyone else put it on kids under 2 years old? Since its just a cream and not a medication I figured it wouldn't matter but I thought you ladies might know more than I do .

well they say 2 years (i did the same as you one time, nothing was working so i grab the vick's and Gabby was fine with it... used it 2 nights in a row) there is one out for under 2 called Vick's baby balm (at least that's what it's called here in OZ)... the smell isn't as strong but it works just as well

I'll have to look for it. I know alot of infant cold products have been taken off the shelves around here b/c of the FDA saying they are not safe for kids under 5 . I would think vicks would not be effected by that but you never know. Thanks I will look for it tomorrow for tonight though I will just but a small amount (circle the size of a quarter)on her.

Yeah I cant imagine that its unsafe to use, but I think only using a small amount is best. Hope that she's feeling better soon!

Trying to rub some on a hankie and place it under her sheet could be a good idea.

The vapors can overwhelm their little lungs. It really isn't considered safe as it has medications that you wouldn't give to an infant. With that said, my mom used it on me as well and I'm obviously still here.

For the future. . .we did Vick's baby rub which I agree--works pretty well and we also have done the Vicks baby vapor bath before bedtime.

We just had my husband in urgent care a couple weeks ago, and I asked the doctor this. He said the plug-in vicks are perfectly safe for babies/kids. I just used it with Emma last night and it worked great!

I used to use the "little noses" saline spray and nose sucker too but never had much luck with it. I recently purchased the "little noses" saline mist and it works much better. It has a continues spray and breaks up the mucus better. I just spray a bunch in each nosril and let it sit and pretty soon its all cleared up.
