isn't 12 weeks too early to know sex??
We have a good friend who is 12 weeks pregnant (my husband's partner and his wife). She just had an ultrasound done and she claims they were "80% sure it's a girl". Isn't that impossible to tell at 12 weeks?? I personally think she's playing head games with her husband (who really wants a boy, and she likes to control him), but she swears that is what the technician told her. What's your opinion?? Itsounds pretty fishy to me.

All babies look female at first...it's not till later on that their "sex" develops. Usually the 2nd trimester...U/S techs will not tell you this early what the sex is (usually) as they really can't tell for sure...but there are ways of telling...such as amniocentesis.
Any good doctor will tell you that you can't "see" the sex until about 17weeks or so.

one of my coworkers had an ultrasound at 13 or 14 weeks and they told her 80% sure girl. they were right, she had a girl. BUT: the others are right, they all pretty much look like girls at that stage!

I was told 15 weeks was the earliest, but I know most techs ((at least around here)) won't even guess what they think it might be until 18 weeks at the earliest. 12 weeks is definitely to early! Sounds like head games to me, or maybe wishful thinking on her part?

My sister was told at 14 weeks by her doc 80% girl.....2 weeks later 100% boy! Her doc may have told her they think its a girl not thinking about how far along she is? Some doctors do silly things like that not really thinking.

My tech told me w/ dd1 at 16 wks i was having a girl showed me the (!) lines and all...she did say tho that it COULD possibly be a boy since i was only 16 weeks and that at the next appt i would know for sure...she is a girl, With DD2 I went for my first ultrasound (ER visit) at 16 weeks, and the tech said she was 80% sure it was a boy....well i had a girl and luckily found out at my real scan when i was about 20 weeks! i agree, 12 weeks is too early! And if the tech did tell her 80% theres still 20% the tech was wrong!

I just read about this subject, actually... 12 weeks is definately too early, but they say that as early as 14 weeks you can tell. However, trying to find out at 14 weeks is a world of a difference than trying to find out at 18-20 weeks (which is why most offices won't even consider the "Big Ultrasound" until 18-20 weeks)! But for sure (according to the books, at least) 14-16 weeks is the earliest!
With my first, we went in at 18 weeks and the tech was 95% sure it was a boy, but 3 weeks later, 100% GIRL! So even at 18 weeks, it can be iffy! (In some cases, of course)!

My SIL found out before she was even 15 weeks, I want to say she was about 13 weeks when she found out it was a boy.... I thought it was strange too but they were right
