Just got an email...
I just received an email from BabyCenter. I signed up to get their weekly emails during my pregnancy. Anyway, today the email's subject is "Is your skin care routine safe for pregnancy?" This just put me over the edge. It seems like everywhere I turn there is something or someone asking "Is _____ safe for during pregnancy?" Is ANYTHING safe during pregnancy anymore?? Can I even wash my face without feeling guilty? Truthfully, I didn't even open the email because I was so annoyed. I read in FitPregnancy magazine that NO amount of coffee is safe. I've been told from so many sources before that one to two cups a day is safe, but now even just one cup can raise your chances of miscarriage. (I don't like coffee, so I'm "in the clear"). It is all just starting to annoy me so much! Can we do anything anymore without feeling guilty, or without putting our babies at risk? I don't think I really elaborated very much with details, but I think many of you get the point! Arg!!

i gave up on it when i was pregnant. i steered clear of all the obvious things (alcohol, etc), and just did what made me happy. if that meant i washed my face & wore makeup then that's what i did!

I agree. When I had my other 2 kids 11 & 13 years ago I could pretty much eat what I wanted and do what made me happy. When I had Emma last year they gave me a 2 page list of what I could not eat. It is a lot of hoopla IMO. Just used my common sense and avoided the obviouse no-no's.

I agree with the others...obviously avoid drugs/alcohol, etc...but do what you feel is best. I even continued to dye my hair throughout my pregnancy.

I truly think that in some respects, the "experts" have gone overboard in what is OK and what is not. And the constantly changing the "what's appropriate and when" for baby gets on my nerves. Things changed in the 23 months between my daughters!
The honest thing is to do what works for you, avoiding the obvious bad things (like the ladies above said). Just like with getting sleep after the baby comes -- do what works for you and your DH. If not, you'll go crazy with guilt.

Agreed, I think the warnings have gone overboard. If you listened to all the hype, you'd be on a bread and water diet -- probably ozonated spring water at that -- and you'd spend your entire pregnancy hiding in a closet. I've had no choice except to take certain meds while pregnant, and I have two relatively healthy boys -- I even had my morning cup of coffee almost daily (couldn't survive without it) and lo and behold, two normal kids. Will wonders never cease.

Common sense must prevail for good health.
Next it will be that chocolate will be harmful!
Then we ladies will all be in big trouble. *giggles*
Common sense to me:
don't take street drugs.
Ask your doctor before taking any over the counter or
prescribed medications while pregnant.
Eat a healthy diet.
Drink milk or the equivilent in yogurt, cheese, etc.
Take care of yourself and your baby, with common sense.

When I was pregnant with my first, I was still living at home with my dad and step mom for most of the pregnancy... My step mom watched me like a HAWK! I had to be in bed by 10, no going out past 9, no chocolate ((which is what I CRAVED)) and a boat load of other things. She caught me with a Reese Cup and literally smacked it out of my hands saying "Vinnie will thank me for watching over you like this one day!"... She drove me NUTS! I used to have to hide chocolate in my room, sneak out of my house and I was 20 years old!!
My next 2 pregnancies, I did as I pleased ((I mean, with in the normal -- ate chocolate, etc)) and ds2 and dd turned out wonderful! Some people are just go a little to over board!

you & my best friend could share some stories! her mom's doing the same thing to her while her fiance' is in basic. she's 22 and her mom isn't letting her eat anything but 100% healthy food. which, is good, but my friend has never eaten this healthy in her life -- normally consists of a ton of fast food. the poor girl's going insane! she sneaks out just to pick up a hamburger!
