Ahhh Love that book... lol... anyway, I never had hemmorhoids until I was in labor with my first child almost six years ago (I guess all that caused them I don't know), but they've never gone away either. I've experienced "problems" with them in my last pregnancy and a few times already in this one, as well as other instances outside of pregnancy (I did end up seeing a doctor for it but there wasn't much he could do either). They don't hurt unless they are aggravated, plus I don't know that it's something EVERY woman experiences, I just got lucky I suppose, lol.... I guess if you were to experience them they might be more noticeable in the later stages of pregnancy, don't mark me on that because I could easily be wrong, but don't stress that either because you might not get them at all!

Hemmorhoids are mostly noticeable in the third trimester and after delivery. They can show up anytime really though, because a there are a few causes. The first is constipation. I had horrible constipation at the end of my first trimester which gave me hemmerhoids-but they went away quickly on their own. Pushing too hard or lingering on the toilet too long are some reasons you could get hemmerhoids. Try to avoid constipation (i.e. drink lot of water..oh and don't sit or stand for long periods of time).

The second is the hormone progesterone can cause swelling (as we all know swelling is common in pregnancy!) and it might just so happen that the veins that become hemmorhoids decide to swell too-sorry, no way to avoid this!

Third is your growing uterus putting pressure in this vein (someone please remind me of the name of this vein) on your right side, which can restrict blood flow, and cause your veins to swell. This is why hemmorhoids are most common in the third trimester.

Last cause is pushing too hard when trying to push out the baby. This gave me hemmorhoids that were pretty awful, and took lots of Tuck pads and ice packs and 2 weeks to get rid of. BUT, I got her out in less that 15 minutes and just a few pushes!!! So, I guess don't push so hard, but if you get a good epidural, you won't be able to tell anyways.

Hope you can avoid them. But if not, please don't be embarrassed. It happens all the time!

Wanted to add-buy a pack of maxi pads before going to the hospital. Run some water over a few and pop them in the freezer. If you have a VB, (and/or get hemmorhoids) you will be glad you have them!

(I hope I don't have to explain what to do with them!)

I've never had them with my two previous baby's, but with this one I got them at around 13-14 wks. They went away, but were very uncomfortable and I had some bleeding when they broke or something. I was so worried, but my mom is a nurse and I called her right away.

What a great tip! I ripped in 4 places with DD's birth (sorry, tmi) and that would have been a big help. Writing that one down on my "to do before baby comes" list!

Okay, well it is good to know that it is common. I had swelling down there after I pushed for two hours before I finally asked for a c-section, but ice helped. I guess I was lucky also and it now explains "my friends" I never knew what they were. Hopefully coming into the homestretch they will keep to themselves.

I have had them since the beginning of my second trimester. No one wants to go into detail, but I will share my experience. One showed up and I knew right away because it hurt to sit, stand and anything else. I tried tucks and they didn't help at all. I ended up calling my grandma and she said preperation H and ice packs. And something about witch hazel-but the smell made me gag. Long story short--I still have it but it dosen't hurt all the time. Hopefully you won't get any but if you do ice and Preperation H works wonders!

I'll share too. I got my first one ever when I was four months preggo with my ds. It really hurt at first but then it didnt and I brushed it off and forgot about until labor. Um, that was very painful. After my son came I tried every over the counter thing and nothing worked. Now I'm preggo with dd and have the same hemorrhoid. I actually am on a prescription cream right now but doubt that it will work because I put it off so long. My advice is if you get one treat it right away. The longer you wait the more aggravated it can get.
