Default Language explosion

I was beginning to be concerned because Conner wasn't really saying much. At just under two, he was only saying about a dozen words or so. He definitely is understanding us, can follow directions, and points to all his body parts as well as animals if we ask him where the cow is, etc. Anyway, last night out of the blue he suddenly started repeating everything we said. It started with me going, "oh jeeze!" and his little "oh jeeze!" after me. Jessica (14) got him saying "dee dee-dee" in Carlos Mencia fashion...it was a comical night.

He did say other productive words, cup, cow, boot, ball, etc. Just like that and he's saying all kinds of new words.

See how he keeps on talking. Sometimes they just don't want to talk and then all of a sudden, there it is. My brother was like that. Had me, his big sister, do all the talking for him by pointing and grunting. I put it into words. Then all of a sudden one day he just started speaking in full sentences.

My son Joe's first word was "day day" for his brother, GJ. GJ was the most important person in the house to him, mom and dad just took care of him. The next most important person was "cat". So that was his next word. And he did not say many words.

GJ of course took charge of his education, and figured that every baby needs to know the names of all the star trek characters. So his next word was "(S)Pock!"

Mama and Dada came later. Much later. And he never talked much, but when he started walking at 15 months, suddenly the words and everything else exploded too. Still doesn't say much now that he is 18 years old, but when he does, it takes people by surprise.

Nice to see these spurts! I think Connors experience is typical of a baby with siblings who are older and chattier. And BTW, he is a cutie! Love that smile!!!

This makes me feel a lot better! I had been worried because Emma wasn't saying much either, but now I can feel a bit more relaxed with the knowledge that it's ok if they don't talk much... Because one day, it will just explode out of her! Thanks!

I feel better too!!! Tiffany doesn't talk much at all!!!!! Maybe 10 words, but RARELY uses them. She does try to tell me things but I have no clue what she is saying. I try not to worry....but she is 20 months old. But she is soooooooo stubborn. So, maybe that is it. She understands too much, so I know she hears well, and understands it......just won't talk. Refuses to try to mimic anything.
I am so glad that he is talking for you now. I am sure that will be fun now, to hear that little voice!!!!

I talked to Emma's ped and she said that some babies tend to rely on their body language because they've used it and become good at getting what they want out of it, so they don't talk much in the beginning. I've been trying to get Emma to ask for things with words, but a lot of times, it turns into frustration on both parts and becomes more a negative thing than it is helpful. I'll be glad when she bursts into words! It will be such a fun stage (no laughter from moms with babies who never stop talking...!!!)

Jamie wasn't much of a talker, he still isn't as talkative as Mikey, but hes quite shy, which adds to it.

way to go Conner!!

i'm glad to read all these other stories about other kids not talking much. izzy doesn't say a whole lot of words, so when she does DH doesn't believe me. she does ma & da when she wants to, but whenever she gets her monkey (george) she says "george!" followed by a kiss. sometimes i get jealous of that stuffed animal. haha.
