Language question
K will say a new word repetitously and then it'll be gone for weeks? Normal?
Do you count that as a word she knows? I mean- at her 15 month visit should I say how many words she had or has consistantly?
She says VERY few words consistantly- and when she does bring new words she sometimes uses them out of context(up is both for up and down for example)- or she'll just randomly repeat new words in her carseat or whereever.

i would just let the doc kno...i was told it if VERY normal for them to put an old word on the back burner when they learn something new. Kaydee started speech therapy this morning and made a liar out of me...apparently she will talk for everyone but me
here is her word list
Uh Oh is her new favortie...says it ALL the time no matter what
Jae Jae (obviously Jaecy) only says it when she feels like it
Mom, Momma, Mommy--for me and Kevin lol
cookie but it sounds like this Cah Cah Cah......ooooKIE! lol
She can make monkey noises
Hi, means hi and bye
today in speech they got her pointing to herself saying what sounds like Kaydee....but i dont think anyone but me and her teacher would understand lol

Wow. I had no idea Kaydee was in ST. I thought her language abilities were pretty typical for a 15 month old. Hmm? Now I am a bit worried as K surely doesn't say THAT many words.

I think it is totally normal. Are you worried or just worried about the dr visit? When a new word helps them accomplish something they will use that word a lot to try to accomplish other things. Ellamae uses “out” to get in or out of the crib, tub, high chair, car seat, etc. When they say “out” when they really mean in and we then help them get in the crib, tub, etc all we are doing is reinforcing that out also means in. So it takes awhile for them to figure it out. They also have other ways of communicating to us and sometimes don’t need or want to learn words. When they repeat a word they are learning how to make the sounds. And then.... poof…..they no longer feel a need to use the word.

I'm not worried about her development at all. She understands words and follows simple directions. I was a late(er) talker as was DH. I don't expect some HUGE language abilities from a 14 month old, ya know?
I just KNOW her doctor is going to ask and I surely don't want her in ST because she's not using her words daily- She does everything at her own pace and it always falls within normal guidelines.

Rhi--my son didn't even attempt his name until he was 25 months! He'd say everyone else's, but not his own. It drove us insane. He wouldn't repeat it, he wouldn't say it when we pointed at him and said "Who's that?" (though he'd go around the room and say 10 others when we did the same thing) It wasn't until we brought our daughter home from the hospital that he'd say his own name!
Lisa--I wouldn't sweat it at this point.

the only reason Kaydee is in ST is because of her hearing...she only has 40% of her hearing in her right ear, so they are going to nip her speech in the butt before it DOES become an issue...she says things as she hears them, which is why she says cookie the way she does

Pippa says the odd word, here doctors don't expect babies to be a genius so it doesn't matter.

Wow- Rhi. NO idea. Must have missed that. Z had a 70% loss in one ear. Her ST said it shouldn't affect speech long term. Glad they caught it early.
((hugs))
