Default Lazy eye or something more serious?

My son is a little over 2. I noticed probably about 6-7 months ago that when he looks up with his head tilted down , that his left eye goes in a weird direction. Just in the past month I am noticing that when you look him in the face that you can tell a difference in the look of his eyes. That eye seems to slightly bulge more than the other when you look closely...
I'm not sure what to do about it. I'm sort of afraid there's something wrong? Should he see an eye doc? Or his regular doctor?

He needs to see an eye doctor, but you might need a referral from his pedi. It is probably nothing serious, but I think you should make him an appt right away.

I do not want to scare you, but I knew a little girl whose eye bulged a little and it turned out she had a tumor behind her eye. Like I said, it is probably not serious but still needs to be checked.

I would take him to a eye doctor. I had a lazy eye and wore a pirate patch through 2nd grade...its best to get that taken care of sooner than later if you can. Let us know how it goes! I hope it's nothing serious

I too have heard about the tumor behind the eye thing as well. The story I heard was the family found out because everytime the little boy had his pic taken, instead of red eye the boy would have white spots in his eyes He died, it was so so sad. I have cried thinking of this very same thing. I am trying not to jump so far ahead of myself! But I checked my son's picks and he has red eye.
My hubby and myself are supposed to wear glasses and now my daughter has glasses to read. I also have a slight lazy eye that is really not noticible unless I read for a long time then things go blurry.
Thanks ladies. If you hear of anything else , let me know.

Please do not make yourself crazy worrying that Ayden might have a tumor behind his eye. I can't bear to think of you crying over your little boy when he more than likely just has a lazy eye. Believe me, when I was pg I cried over every little thing as well so I understand exactly where you are at right now.

If it makes you feel any better, the little girl I knew who had a tumor did not die. She was 18 months old, she had to have surgery, and she recovered. That is all I will say, so as not to give you more to worry about. Take that sweet little boy to the eye doctor and find out what is going on with his eyeball, and then I will tell you the rest of the story!

But seriously, call and make him an appt, ok? I will pray for him.

Wow, that WAS fast! Well I think it is great they are able to see him so quickly, now you can get some answers and stop thinking the worst. I will be checking in to see what you find out.

So we took Ayden in to have him evaluated. We saw a new doc that we've never seen before, she was very nice and patient with him. Of course, being shy, he started crying and wouldn't even barely look at her. (he had no nap today and he doesn't like doctors!)
We couldn't get him to do the "eye thing" to show her how his eye goes in a different direction but she could see by shining a light in his eyes that the light reflected differently off of that eye, and she noticed the difference in the "bulge" of his eye as well.
So we have a referal, he goes Nov. 17th to an optimologist. I hope he is alright! I will feel so bad that I didn't take him sooner if there's something wrong.

any chance he could get into an ophthalmologist any sooner? Is it a pediatric ophthalmologist? Please don't blame yourself. These things are so hard to pick up in little ones. However, if it something that could permanently alter his vision or could be causing him pain, perhaps the specialist could see him sooner?

Lazy eye runs in my family, and many of my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc. have had corrective surgery for it. The hardest part is keeping them from ripping the patch off of their eye. So, if surgery is the answer, then you can rest easy. It's emotional, I know... but none of my family has ever had a bad experience with that.

As far as pain, I've never heard of someone being in pain over it. They had it corrected as children (most of them remember it very well), and none of them said that having lazy eye was painful.

You don't need to feel bad for not taking him sooner. Sometimes, when we discover things, we want to take time to see if it will pass before we subject our child to all kinds of tests/treaments. It's not life-threatening, so you just did what most of us would have done. There's nothing wrong with that!
