List of Things You ACTUALLY USED
Ok I am posting this here for all those mommies to be that are already mommies plus i will be posting this in the parenting forum. We are trying to figure out everything that we actually need to have.
We have some stuff already
Car Seat
Stroller
Basinett ~ was a gift never would have got one by myself.
Play Pen
We are getting
Crib
Swing
We have a weird collection of some clothes that I had left from my son. But an EVIL SIL has gone through and taken what she likes without my permission. We have a couple of blankets also given as gifts. But am wondering what else is on the need to have list.

I personally never used a bassinet or playpen for any of my four kids.
An infant swing is important. Of course we used a crib, onsies, diapers, cloth diapers (for spit-up rags) and receiving blankets. Hats-even if you have a warm-weather baby you'll want to protect their scalp from the sun. Lotion, baby soap, and diaper rash cream. Vaseline has come in handy many times too. We still use a bumbo seat, and the boppy too. Of course, you need a carseat. That pretty much goes without saying. I found infant bathtubs helpful-even though they don't use them long, they make it very easy to wash a squirming baby! Conner's jumperoo has been used for over 2 hours a day since he was 3 months old-I'd highly recommend it to anyone with an "active" baby. Not all mine were active-I can't imagine Jessica would have liked it when she was an infant
Really, you don't "need" much. There is a lot out there that makes life more convenient though. I never used a changing table-we had one for our first but I found it inconvenient to continuously run down to her room just to change her diaper. It's really about what works for you.

high chair...we have one that goes on a regular dining room chair that is seat from newborn to 3 years. matthew and madeline can both use it. We put her in it while we ate.
bouncer...on preference my girl loves hers and her swing so I can change her in and out
music for room. soothes her a lot!
Pacifiers and about 50! we have like 30 right now
bottles...whether you bf or not...backups are a must!
blankies
sling...my favorite
play mats for tummy time
a mommy cover up for bf in public
those crib toys that play music and allow the to puck is on and off.
or a mobile that does the same

The absolute essentials that I couldn't live without
**front carrier- I could strap it on and go anywhere and dd had a comfy ride plus I could bf while wearing it
**car seat- I loved the type that doubles as a carrier, it made eating out a breeze
**recieving blankets- they work as burp clothes, bf cover ups, changing pads and sun protectors
**sunblock, gas drops and infant tylenol- I once forgot the sunblock and dd had blisteres
**diaper cream- My favorite is the creamy kind
**onesies and gowns- it's easy to throw a onesie on when company shows up or your running a quick errand, and the gowns make changing diapers a breeze even when baby is sleeping!
**swing- came in handy when dd was older
**Colorful floor mat- The cheaper ones work just as well as the expensive ones
*We had a bouncy chair that in-laws bought and dd hated it and a lot of fancy outfits that she grew out of before wearing them! I never used pacifiers so can't help with that one. Just remember that breast milk and formula stains clothes! No one told me that one!
**Drop-ins bottle- my personal favorite and easy to clean
Hope this helps!

Everyone made some great suggestions! Obviously, there are some things mentioned that you could live without-meaning, they aren't absolute necessities. I'd say before baby comes home, you absolutely need: diapers, wipes are not recommended for newborns so use a warm wet washcloth-get lots of washcloths!, soap, lotion, extra pacifiers (lots and lots because when they start teething, its nice to keep a few in the freezer!!!), hairbrush, thermometer, towels, infant tylenol, nose bulb (newborns have lots of gunk built up in their sinuses that come out in the first few days!), blankets, co-sleeper or crib, anything that baby can be put in safely (i.e. sling, swing, bouncer, etc.) so you can get your stuff done, trash can with a lid for dirty diapers (Diaper Genie was a HUGE waste of money-cheap trashcan was like $5), have a plan for what you're using as "white noise"-mine was a box fan on low setting, baby emory(sp?) boards are great the first few weeks-I couldn't really use a clipper yet and they kept me from having to use those mittens she hated. I know there are things I'm forgetting. Hmmm...saline nose drops aren't a bad thing to have, and neither are the gas drops. Just be sure you ask the doctor how much is safe to give! Oh, duh a bathtub made for baby is great-I used the fisher price aquarium one. Now she's got this big inflatable ducky one.
If I think of more I will be back!

Okay my very favorite thing to give people at baby showers because no one thnks of it is medicines (Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Mylicon, Little Noses- the saline thingy for when they're all snotty and you have to use thaty nose sucker thing- Baby Orajel, etc.) A lot of people don't think to have them but you never know when you're going to need them, and two when you actually HAVE the baby I would recommend having Karo syrup on hand (if you're formula feeding) to help with constipation problems your child might have. I know these might seem stupid but everyone already mentioned the typical baby items you will be needing (some even mentioned some of the exact things i did).... oh yeah, and I had a bassinet with my last one and didn't really use it. It kind of just took up space because my son for whatever reason would not sleep in it. Just some random ideas for you!

The medicine thing is the same thing i was talking to DH about. I would rather have medicine given to me then newborn stuff. My MIL always buys a bunch of newborn clothes and the babies never get to wear some of it because they grow so fast. I am already stocking up on medicine. The bassinet is a nice one that converts from a co sleeper to a rocking cradle to a bassinet and a diaper changing station. If you have been to walmarts baby section you have probably seen it as it is a Winnie the Pooh bassinet. Its cute and it has a musical mobile the thing vibrates and has a night light and a light show for baby and a handy remote control. It is a lot of bang for the buck and my neice loves it. We tried it out on her the other day she is only two weeks old. So it actually may get used. Who knows. If the kid is like me it wont like it but we shall see.
