Do you think the security guards were right when they asked the mad to cover his shirt with Arabic writing? Do you think he should have been awarded compensation?
Personally, I am disappointed in the actions of the guards. I do understand that sometimes people do or say or wear things that make others uncomfortable, as the article stated the the shirt apparently made others feel uncomfortable, but sometimes those other people just have to deal with it. The world isn't going to conform so that everyone feels comfortable with everyone else's actions at all times. The more I think about it, the more angry I get with the situation. I went to school for Criminal Justice (with the hopes of becoming a police officer, but due to the state/county/city hiring freeze in MN, that won't be happening anytime soon!) and I took a class called Homeland Security where we learned about situations just like this one. It's racial profiling, and it's ridiculous. Racial profiling is when a guard or officer makes a stop based on a person's race. In this case, an Arabic man (US resident, might I add), wearing a shirt with Arabic writing, was stopped and forced to put another shirt on over his. Other cases include when officers stop people that "look" like they would be a person to cause trouble. No probable cause, no suspicious bahavior... that's why it's called racial profiling because they try to stop something from happening before it happens. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid!! Did you know that 98% of all racial profiling stops turn out to be Nothing?
Now I'm just going on a rant. I could talk about this subject all day long. I'm very passionate, but I will spare you! I just wanted to say that I'm glad that Raed Jarrar is now $240,000 richer. Shame on those security guards; we are past those racial profiling days; past the days of trying to make everyone else feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Did you catch that his shirt means "We will not be silent" in English? Something to think about...
