Default Medicine

So one of the downsides of going back to work is I'm around people all day and now I am sick Sore throat, stuffy nose and cough. I was wondering what medicines are ok to take if I am nursing, if any? If not, should I pump and dump? I have probably enough milk in the freezer for a few days, but I'd rather save it if I can.

Sorry to say this....treat it just like you were preggie...I know...I have been sick too and I BF...I hate that I can't take much...it gets better when they get older you can take some stuff... Try a hot shower to help your stuffiness and a hot water bottle as well...you can take tylenol if you feel achy.

BUT if you feel the need to take anything as you feel miserable...go ahead and "pump and dump"

Hope you feel Better soon Briana

thanks. having a cold is the worst! I'd rather have the flu cause at least it only lasts a day or too...colds seem to hang around forever.

I was going to suggest safefetus.com also. It is really helpful for breastfeeding moms to. From what I've read, there are only a couple of medicines that would cause you to have to "pump and dump" You might want to call your doctor or your hospital's advice line. They should know, but it is common for doctors to be unaware of what is safe and just suggest you p&d. I think this is because pharmacuetical companies are very conservative about drugs and breastfeeding. There is a textbook (I've been meaning to get) called Medications and Mother's Milk by Thomas Hale. I can send out an email on this other group I'm on to find out what is safe to take, since a lot of the members own the book and check it often. They would probably just know offhand what's ok to take.
DO NOT TAKE SUDAFED! Sorry to write it in bold, but I think it's really important. Taking it can dry up your supply. Sometimes people take it while they are weaning and often times unsuspecting nursing mother's take it and then are forced to supplement or wean.

I was going to say pretty much what Kimchee said. Don't take SUDAFED!!!! The thinking is generally that if it's a medication that the baby would take if she were sick then it is find for you to take it. I usually take Tylenol cold medicine when I'm sick. Only miniscule amounts enter the breastmilk and most pediatricians (in fact I haven't talked to any pedi or breastfeeding person that's said otherwise) say it's not a big deal. This is not like pg where any thing you take can directly enter the baby and you have a lot more 'freedom' (if I can put it that way). You do not need to pump and dump and in fact I wouldn't recommend it as I'm sure that would delay your overall recovery. On askdrsears.com they have a short list of medications that are fine to take while breastfeeding. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for all your advice Called my doc and they suggest Tylenol Cold so I'll have to pick some up on my way to work. I'm now trying to not get the baby sick....washing my hands a lot more and having DH do all the dirty work (i.e. changing). I read something about how sudafed dries up your sinuses and since your ducts are sinuses they will dry up to so that was never an option Again thanks
