Hmmm....maybe if he was having an affair he opened it to show what the other woman got him? Doesn't sound to me like this is the ghost of Christmas Perfect, more like this is an argument that got out of control, the weapons being a Christmas present and a knife.
Maybe he was deliberately baiting her, taunting her over something. Maybe he was saying "yeah, so much for your Christmas" - and then when she snaps, he's all passive, pretending like sheesh, all I did was open a present early. Or maybe he's an abused husband who can't catch a break.
Gotta be more to this than was reported.
