Default Mother gives birth to Octuplets

I don't know if someone posted about this in another forum, but I couldn't find one so I thought I'd start one!http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090131/...e_us/octuplets

What do you all think about the mother who gave birth to octuplets recently?

My first impression was, Wow! She is going to have her hands full, and that must have been one heck of a pregnancy! But then I learned of a few more details. I know that the media have a tendency to slant thinks, and "facts" are never "facts" in the media. Anyway, the mother (Nadya) has six other children, one of whom is autistic. I understand those who want large families, but this woman also filed for bankruptcy last year, and receives government assistance to care for her children as well as to attend school.

Don't get me wrong-- I'm not against helping those in need, but in my opinion she is being absolutely ridiculous because she obviously can't afford the six she had, so she undergoes more invitro for more?? I don't think it's right on her part, and they don't know who the fertility doctor is yet, but I also don't think he is in his right mind.

Anyway, what do you all think? Should Nadya have been allowed to undergo the fertility treatment that conceived these eight new babies, and do you think that she should be allowed more, if she decides to take that route??

I've been pretty mad about this whole thing. This women and her Dr. are turning such a bad spotlight on IVF and fertility treatments. Some Dr.'s are now calling for a contract about the number of children someone can have with IVF. I doubt it would pass as law but still. It makes me so mad that one dumb women can turn something good into a freak show. IVF has helped so many women and about 90% of Dr. wont implant more than 3 embryos.

So I would have to say I blame a lot of this on her RE. He is probably just in it for the money b/c if she got pregnant before what was the need to implant so many babies? She has no problem carrying them but just getting pregnant. So he should have implanted 1 or 2 and not 8! Plus she has a problem with gathering kids like dolls! Her own mother has come forward to say her daughter has issues with always wanting to be pregnant. ANY good RE's office would send her into a shrink before doing an IVF cycle. My Dr.'s rule is after your 3rd child you have to see some one to make sure you are healthy both mentally and physically to carry more children. This is in effort to prevent people like this women from producing kids that they cant take care of or are trying to fill some emotional problem.

I really cant blame this women to much since she must have a problem but her Dr. should have known better. I hope they figure out who he/she is and stop them from doing this again.

It really is a shame that this is putting so much bad light on IVF. People like this just make me so mad. So many families have to fight to do treatments with insurance companies and state laws. All this bad light is going to make it hard for women who really need the treatments to get them b/c less and less people believe IVF is a good thing and less and less states are pushing for it now. It's just sad!

Yes, it is drawing really stupid attention to IVF. But it is an interesting ethical dilemma. (There ya go, Miki!!!)

I understand the medical reasons and risks for "selective reduction" - that is to abort some multiples to increase the chance of survival of the rest, and the mom. This mom was counseled, and like so many, said no. Nuff said - the threats that some moms hear about this, about not having medical care etc - is for another thread.

But this one already had 6 children, and has difficulty supporting them. Now, if she naturally conceived multiples, ok, stuff happens. But IVF is a pretty detailed thing - who paid for this? And why would any doctor agree to it BEFORE anyone is conceived, knowing that the possibility of multiples is likely? Do they just assume that they can bully women into abortions?

Someone should have been asking these questions BEFORE the IVF was started.

From this statement:

"She told me that all of her kids were through in vitro, and I said 'Gosh, how can you afford that and go to school at the same time?"' she added. "And she said it's because she got paid for it."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090131/...e_us/octuplets

My guess would be she was donating most of the embryos for money. So this brings up the question of how many IVF cycles did she do? How many kids does she have out there? You are talking at least $8,000-12,000 a cycle for a least 4 good embryos. Thats a lot of money she was making each time. If she had some type of dealing going with the Dr. where she was selling her eggs/embryos then that would explain why the RE would let her keep getting pregnant and why he would pretty much let her implant as many and do as she pleased. She was the RE's money maker. Dr.'s not only buy the eggs/embryos but some offices sell them at a high price to couples. So they make there money back. The Re could also have offered her free IVF for "X" amount of eggs/embryos. That is my feeling from that quote. It cant really mean anything else.

So is she the cash cow or the goose that lays the golden eggs? Absolutely disgusting. Now that REALLY is an ethical discussion.

She had 6 kids ages 7 and younger.....now has 6 babies = 12 kids.
How can any single person handle that many and
not go crazy trying?

I am trying not to be judgemental, but I personally could
not even attempt that many babies + the older children too.

Nope she has 7 kids - 8 Babies so 14 children under the age of 8 with no father in the picture at all. How can that be right and ethical?

I just don't think this story is exactly right. My feeling is that she actually took some fertility drugs (Clomid or something) without a doctor's supervision. I can't imagine that ANY doctor would transfer 8 embryos. Or else maybe she went to Mexico or another country to have this done.

Regardless, it's horrible irresponsible and selfish. I strongly suspect this woman is mentally ill.

I read like Jennifer said that she had wanted to be pregnant since she was a teenager, and turned out she had some type of problem with her tubes. She underwent treatment and had a bunch of embryos frozen, all of her previous children were ivf babies and the article I read said that they all at least the first 7 had the same sperm donor father. I just really find the whole thing sad, one of her children is autistic and she claimed bankruptcy and lives at home? I think I recall reading that she wanted them all implanted because it was her last time or something, I just think she is a very selfish woman who must have some disorder where she feels as if she has to have an infant to improve her self esteem.
