Mothers side or Fathers side?
I have NO idea where to post this so I am just going to post it in this section.
Anyways,
A friend and I were discussing Twins and how they, well, happen! I have a very good change of having them since it runs in my family for faternal twins. I know that its up to the FAMALE to produce 2 eggs in order to be able to conceive twins.
BUT, my friend says it doesnt matter if the mother has 2 eggs or not, it has to depend on if twins run in the Fathers side as well..
I tried telling her that it depends on the father for identical twins as that is 2 sperm in 1 egg and the cells dividing, but she keeps ARGUING that the father is reliable for identical AND faternal...
Please help me out here, Its getting in my head

Fraternal twins are definitely due to the mother's genetics- how would the father's genetics determine if the mother releases one or two eggs? You are definitely right on that one
As for identical twins...I have to disagree with you here. They do not occur when two sperm fertilize one egg, but rather when one sperm fertilizes one egg, and it divides in two- creating two identical cells. It's actually considered to be not genetically related at all, but a fluke of nature.
...yeah, I'm kind of fascinated by the whole thing, lol.

Yep--what Jadis said. Um. . .dare I say your friend doesn't understand very well how babies are made? Fraternal twins can run genetically in families (although there are a few other things besides fertility drugs thought to influence a woman's chances of having twins that don't influence her singleton daughter's chance of having twins). . .and identical twins are a complete fluke of nature.

My girls are Fraternal, and twins run on my mothers side as well. I have never heard of the father's side though, but who knows.

I was always taught in school that identical twins were made from 2 sperm 1 eggs, thats interesting how it could come from 1 sperm as well... HMMMM
Im happy to know that I know my stuff and my friend doesnt HEHE...
She also said i wasnt moody or sick enough to be pg with twins.. I didnt say I was pregnant with twins I was just telling here there was a chance I could be, and I heard your body still is different with twins, you still have a chance of not getting sick and if you are sick, its the same or worse.. I heard its just how your body handles with pregnancy

Ohh....I would write your school, lol. If more than one sperm fertilize an egg, it almost always results in an unviable pregnancy. Two sperm would definitely not cause identical twins, as each sperm carries different genetic material.
Ohh- you think it may be twins? When are you getting an u/s to find out? I'm just hoping that when I get pg again I don't get the same horrible 22 weeks of pregnancy sickness...

Jadis is exactly right.. Two sperm, one egg wouldn't result in a pregnancy. (If it did, I would like to see that baby! hehe!)
Anyway, so you think it's twins? What makes you think that? That's interesting! Do you feel sicker than normal? I heard that those pregnant with twins are way sicker than normal. A friend had twins and she was sick well into her second trimester-- like you, Jadis! Are you having an ultrasound soon, Dani?

No. . .identical twins results from one sperm and one egg period. There is not two sperm involved in identical twins. Two sperm + two eggs = fraternal; one sperm+one egg + a dividing spree = identical twins. . .triplets. . .etc.
It's how your body handles pg period. Lord help Jadis if she ever gets pg with twins . I wasn't that sick with twins--I puked once I think. But I was NEVER sick with singletons--EVER. Sickness is a good indicator of twins. . .although obviously not hte only one.

Two sperm one egg is actually one of the leading theories as to the cause of triploidy, a condition that usually results in miscarrying and that is not compatible with life
Man, I was so sick when I first found out I was pregnant that some people mentioned that it may be twins....NOT something to say to someone who is already freaked out enough by the pregnancy itself, lol. Not that it would have been a bad thing- just a LARGE adjustment period would have been needed.
