Default Movies that are better than the book

I am here watching "Last of the Mohicans" AGAIN on AMC. I love this movie and happen to think it is better than the book by far. The book dragged a bit and the movie, well, the movie is just incredible.

Any other movies that you can think of that are better than the book?

Actually, I like that book. But it is a different experience, and the movie certainly moves the action along.

Edna Ferber's books are AWFUL IMHO. But the classic movies based on them - "showboat" and "Giant" are really wonderful.

The jurassic park books are good, but the movies are better. I think the books were written to be movies in the first place.

In some cases the book comes after the movie. 2001 A Space Odyssey comes to mind. The movie came first and the book after.

I can't think of any that I like better as movies. I usually always like the book better, but I prefer books to movies anyway. I'm weird like that! I like to create my own mental images of scenes and characters. Movies often don't measure up to what I imagine and I really hate when screen writers change endings and other important elements.

The short story came first. The Sentinel was written by Clarke in 1950 and the movie came from that and some of his other stories. The novel was then written to compliment the movie.

The movie pretty much stands on its own.

Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is one of my favorite novels, but the movie is difficult to watch. They are two entirely different experiences. Burgess experimented with language and wrote this novel in the style of James Joyce. He was a well known Joyce scholar. The wonderful thing for me is that after the first few pages, the language really flows.

That surreal sadism that is depicted in the movie done in such a circus like way is probably the best way to capture the spirit of the book on film.

I love Showboat too but then I like the music from it and the Kathryn Grayson/ Howard Keel combination and the song Can't help Lovin' that man' even though I don't agree with absolutely ALL the ethos behind it.

I prefer the 1936 version of Showboat. It's got Paul Robeson and Hattie McDaniel. And Alan Jones was smooooth....!
