Mrsa!
Okay so Mikael's "little man" was swollen and red and had discharge the other night. He was bleeding. He also was in a lot of pain, so we took him to Children's Hospital. 6 hours later, they examined him and said that he had "balanitis", infections of his little man, as he is intact. Well they took a culture of the discharge and he has MRSA!!!!!! I am freaking out. He is currently on Augmentin but usually that does not work against MRSA I read. They are running more tests and I should hear more tomorrow.
He seems to be getting better though with the Augmentin.. ugh! I am positive its from the stupid daycare he was at when he kept getting the staph infections.

I am so sorry!! That's so scary! I hope he gets all better very soon. I agree I'd be calling the daycare also to let them know he has it so they can let other parents know.

Well Mikael is not in that daycare. He kept getting staph infections there, so we took him out in July. But I think that because they kept just giving us topical stuff that it just got rampant. A few weeks ago he had what I thought was a spider bite, but my gut told me it was MRSA. it probably was.
So tomorrow I will know more they are running more tests. I am worried that the person watching him now wont watch him anymore...
He is doing so much better now though since he has been on the Augmentin. it is possible that by draining and collecting the discharge it may have helped cure it... as usually that is the first they have to do to get rid of MRSA.
Ugh what a bad week!

MRSA is present in everyones body naturally all over your skin, up your nose etc, the chances of catching it from somewhere else is almost nill. If you've ever had a boil, a stye, bronchitis(which Mikey has had three times now), pnuemonia then you've almost certainly at some point had a strain of MRSA become active yourself. The reason children get it a lot is because their immune systems are naturally lower than an adults and they aren't as good at washing their hands/keeping their hands out of their eyes, nose and mouth. The media makes MRSA seem so much scarier than it really is, which is why people become so scared when they hear those four letters.
Breannie don't panick yourself about antibiotics, augmentin can only be considered ineffective if you know the exact strain of MRSA, like the common cold there are many types. He'll be ok soon enough, it probably doesn't feel like it, but try not to worry too much. Did you have to wait 6 hours to be seen? If so you definately need to complain about that. Just keep him as entertained as you can at the hospital, it will take his mind off things and yours.

thanks for the responses.
I know that MRSA is generally seen all over but I also know the ramifications if it is not treated properly and right away.
Yes it took us 6 hours to be seen. Children's hospital was so incredibly busy.
And no we are not in the hospital right now. They didn't know it was MRSA until yesterday. So today we should expect a call back to find out what to do from here.
In the meantime, we are cleaning everything really well. I am trying to clean him really well too but he just is not cooperating.
I am hoping the Augmentin is ok, I dont know what strain of MRSA he has. I expect to ask the sensitivity today when they call... to find out what medication this particular strain is most sensitive to.
I am also worried if we are all carriers what will happen to us... ya know? I dont know if they do antibiotics for the whole family...

Everyone in the world is a carrier, just like we all carry e-coli from around two days after birth.

Well it was indeed MRSA. The Augmentin was not effective so he is on Bactrim right now. I dont know if it is working though, it doesnt seem to be doing much but I cant tell since it wasnt really an active outbreak. He just has a couple "pimples" here and there.. and I cant tell if its just a pimple or staph. So I will keep an eye on it and call his pedi to schedule a follow up appt.
my babysitter quit on me saying she was too afraid to watch him... which is ridiculous since she has been watching him for 4 months so she was already "exposed" if you will. I am so mad at her right now.. esp. because it will be fine if she would just wash her hands.
UGH!
