My baby is flying in tomorrow
Well, I have been watching the snowy skies on TV, just wondering if whatever evil forces remain in my life will keep my son Joe from joining me for Christmas. But Newark looks clear for tomorrow. He visited his father and brother for a few days, and now a whole week with me.
Our Christmases were shot to hell with the court ordering that Christmas day be split in two. So for years, because the kids were involved with several services at church, my ex "let" me have Christmas eve. He didn't approve of the jazz service, the traditional one was too late for him at 11 pm, he couldn't see to drive at night (except when he wants to) and in short, he didn't want to be bothered. So we always carved out Christmas eve traditions, and opened most of our gifts - then on Christmas day they would go with their dad, or later go to the homeless shelter, or even later go to the fiance's house. But our traditions were centered around running here and there and meeting other people's schedules and deadlines.
This year, Joe and I will attend a candlelight service - then a dinner at church. Then home. Hopefully the DVD player will work, since watching "Invader Zim's Most Horrible Christmas Ever" is an annual occurrence for us. We can read night before Christmas, eat stuff, open stuff, do what we want.
And Christmas morning, we can eat stuff, cook stuff, watch stuff, play with stuff, do what we want. Including sleep. For the first time in over 10 years, with at least one of my kids, I get a whole Christmas on no one else's terms.
If the weather is good, we will probably do a run along the beach. Thursday is a regular run day for me anyway.
A whole Christmas without having to ask anyone else if it is ok if we sleep late. A whole Christmas where I have all freaking day to cook and no one has to rush anywhere or else someone will be offended. Whole at last.
Can't wait to play with my choo choo trains - with my son - on Christmas! Now that he is grown up, we can play with the trains if we want!!! The freedom of it all!!!

"Invader Zim's Most horrible Christmas Ever"? Really? I would've guessed something more along the lines of "Its a Wonderful Life" but what do I know?
Sounds like a fun week planned anyways! Except for the running part. I'm allergic to running.
Have a very Merry Christmas!

It sounds perfect. Enjoy! Your old Christmases sound a lot like ours, when step dd was little and lived with her mom. It was split and she would never let us have her overnight or early in the day. Had to be 2 o'clock, and it was a two hour drive one way, so four hours in the car on top of it all. It was a hectic nightmare for years. Now we have our own kids and step dd is grown, so there is no more negotiating. We go to Mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas, we get up, open gifts and spend a leisurely day playing with toys and cooking.

Yes patty, I have never understood this possessiveness. I am the Christmas freak, he never did anything, had to be nagged to plug in a string of lights. But when I said in court don't split up Christmas, maybe alternate years, the judge looked at me like I was crazy and said no one should EVER miss Christmas with their kids, and the ex agreed because after all the judge (twice divorced himself, favoring arm candy) was an EXPERT.
Truth was, he couldn't deal with the whole package of Christmas eve, Christmas morning, church, friends, etc. So I got to cram that into Christmas eve.
We are having such a great time now - Joe got here without any weather problems, we got the tree, went for a barbecue dinner at a local redneck bar, and now he is sacked out on the couch watching Futurama. Has already shared some funny stories with me. Tomorrow we will go for our run, and I will buy him his Christmas present with him there - he needs decent running shoes, so the whole experience of being fitted and getting someone to fuss over him and get the top of the line is the present.
And I am SO looking forward to having all this unbroken time Wednesday and THursday.

Yes. Invader Zim.
At one point my oldest son wanted to change his name to Dib.
They still want me to get lawn gnomes for the yard. LASER lawn gnomes.
