Default My fear of Immunizations (UPDATED)

Hello everyone, I haven't posted in here in a long time so there may already other posts out there like this so I am sorry if thats the case. My girls are scheduled to go to the dr tomm for their 2 yr checkup because I rescheduled it back in April due to my fear of having them vaccinated and this was the earliest they could get us in but anyway I am absolutely TERRIFIED at the thought of getting their shots done tomm, I know they have had them in the past but I have read so many scary articles about Autism and immunizations here recently and now I have myself stressed out so bad about it. Am I crazy? Does anyone else have this fear or is it just me? It just scares me to death to think about taking my healthy happy girls in to get shots and something going wrong ya know? Maybe Im just nuts.

Hi, Nikki! You're NOT nuts. I, too, fear the whole shots bit. However, for me the benefits out weigh the risk. There are a few we're NOT doing and we're delaying the MMR until her 2nd year. But other than that she's fully vaccinated.

Honestly, because in my profession I have worked with a plethora of kid who have been diagnosed autistic- IMO only a few out of handfuls were truly fit the critera. I think(just my opinion) that a lot of doctors have NO "label" for children who are showing developmental delays- so they label them autistic. Also still with my whole heart believe that autism and shots really do not show a direct correlation- I think it is the easy answer for a plethora of kids(mainly BOYS) diagnosed over the past decade or so.

So, with that said- We'll bare on the side of caution and delay a few shots(mainly for other reasons NOT associated with ASD) and hope for the best!

I totally understand your frustration- do what is in YOUR heart.. I have learned a lot of my past experiences to always, always, always trust your gut!

Thanks Lisa! THe girls are also fully vaccinated at this point as well and I didn't seem to freak out nearly as bad with the past shots. And you are absolutely right, the benefits do out weigh the risk, THe MMR is the one that I am afraid of the most but I do not think that they are due another dose of that one this time around but I am not 100% sure as their shot records are in a locked filing cabinet that we lost the key to during the move and their Dr office has been closed for the 3 day weekend so I couldn't call and ask them so this whole weekend I have stressed about wether or not they will need that one or which ones they will need. Arrggghh! I am notsure why I am stressed about it though, like there isn't a million other things to stress about ya know?? Lol Oh well I will just take a few deep breaths and try not to think about it and maybe we will get there tomm and they will not have to get ANY shots! That would be nice.

If you're super worried.. delay them. They cannot force you to get them done- in fact, I believe in most states you have to sign for them. Our Pedi is big time pro-vaccine- So I am pretty sure he's going to be UBER annoyed with me when the ones we're delaying/avoiding come up! Oh, well. My kid, my choice!

((Hugs)) Post more often girl. We need more twin pics, btw!

It has been a long time since I have seen you on here!!! how are your girls doing???
I don't see anything wrong with being stressed about the shots. They are important, but there can be side effects. It is scary. It is a good idea to not get them all at once, and also to delay some of them.
I hope your appointment goes well. Let us know what you decided.

Alyssa's pediatrician is the same way. I asked for a delayed schedule, but he said he didn't offer that. If I didn't agree, then I could see a different doc. The only problem, is he is the absolute best that medicaid will cover!

The program I have Alyssa in, will help provide a note excusing her from getting any more vaccines. I too, realize the pedi. will be pissed! But as any mom raising an autistic (not diagnosed but the signs are there) child, we all see the vaccines as a problem. When I take in my baby, who is talking and playing, for her shots, and we leave that day, and she never talks or plays right again....well, its a huge problem.

Its not only a problem for the children (obviously), but its puts an incredible amount of guilt on the mom. I will always look back in shame that I didn't stand my ground. So, by all means, do what you feel is right. If something in the back of your head is telling you not to, don't ignore it.

But if this helps, if your children have had vaccines that haven't caused any problems, chances are your doctor had access to the new ones, with less mercury. I think my pedi was still using leftover from the old batches. I'm trying to find out, but they won't release that info. What do they have to hide, I wonder?

Anyways, I will quit rambling. You are a good mom, and you will do what is best. We worry, because we're good at it.

Mercury isn't the only things in the vaccines that they think is linking it to the rise in Autism, ASD and ADHD---- a lot of the doctors with DAN (Defeat Autism Now) think that the vaccines overwhelm the immune system causing the immune system to do wacky things (I know not a very good explanation) It is a fascinating topic, I think the fact that back it the 80's only 12 or so shots were given, and now over 33 are given and at the same time a huge spike in childhood issues has happened is no coincidence. (Allergies, asthma, autism & other spectrum disorders, childhood cancer, rhumetoid arthritus ---all have risen dramatically) It is scary, but you don't want your kids to get the measles or whooping cough either!!!

You are all right, it is sooo scary, and its just scary to think about the amount of shots they need now. I was telling DH last night that it scares me to think of what our kids children and further down will have to be vaccinated for!Our appt is today at 3:30 and like many of you you guys we have a pedi that will NOT be happy if we decide to delay but he will not have to live with the guilt if something went wrong. I am really really really hoping that this is the appt we do not need any shots but I am trying to treat it as though we are getting them just so I am prepared. It is so nice to have this place where I can come on and talk to you guys about things like this. I can talk to DH about it but he doesn't know as much about it so he doesnt worry like I do, but then again I think I tend to OVER worry when it comes to my kiddos!

My dh is the same...he doesn't worry about anything when it comes to Katelyn. He always says "Oh she'll be fine" or "she's smart enough to know not to do that" Which is just crazy....because he says that when she wants to go to bed with her monkey on her back (stuffed monkey that is a leash and wraps around her body) I told him she could strangle herself and he says "she's smart enough to not do that"?!?!?! What the heck???
Anyway Good Luck at the doctor appointment.
