Cool My lab rat!

Well Nevy is being used as a lab rat! Ok not really but it sure feels like it!

Her G.I. wants to see if she had a "true" milk protein allergy. So I was give 2 options...

#1 They do a few blood tests to see if she has it. They need 4 tubes of blood so they would need to put an IV in and draw from that. (I had a really bad experience with Nevy and an IV already when she was 6 days old)

#2 We try the formula limbo. I try a few different types and just "watch" for a reaction. (So she'll be a lab rat for a few months!)

Needless to say I picked option #2. So Nevy is going to slowly be weaned to regular formula. Then at 12 months she will slowly go from regular formula to cows milk. The reason for all of this is b/c they want to take her off the prevacid and see if she still has reflux. Since milk protein allergies have some of the same symptoms as reflux they need to rule it out before removing her from the med. So the next few months may be pretty hard for us.

On the bright side she is 17lbs 5oz (50th %tile)and 27 inches(75th %tile)!

Well wish us luck! I have a bad feeling its going to be a loooooong next few months!

WOW, she is growing like a weed! Emma goes on 4/2, I can't wait to see how much she weighs.

I will keep my fingers XXXXX'd that all goes well with the weaning. Hopefully her little tummy will do just fine and it will be smooth sailing.

See now being a mother who's child has severe milk allergies ( I can't even stress how bad!!!!!!!!!!!!) I would go with option 1 for sure. When milk even touches Brennan's lips his eyes swell up and ecezma covered from head to foot. (my FIL not knowing gave him ice cream cake last mnth, I wanted to kill him!) Being pricked a couple of times out ways the terrible reaction they could have. Good luck and I hope she isn't allergic for your sack and hers! it is horrible!

well im pretty sure if she were to have a reaction of that magnitude, it would have happened to ehr as an infant, but i could be wrong!

Kaydee and Nevi have had pretty similar experiences (Jen is who i go to for any advice i need for Kayds) and Kaydee was showing signs of reflux, so they swicthed her to a milk-protein sensitive formula. She may or may not have a sensitvity, but she still spits up after almost every feeding...she doesnt swell or anything from milk (I gave her some icing off a cake she was fine after except for the screaming for more)

We have already introduced baby yogurt to her diet and so far we haven't had any problems. What we thought were reactions as an infant could have just been her reflux (vomiting, stomach pain, mucus in stool etc). She never had a serious reaction to it which is why we want to test her. As for option #1.... I dont think I could put my child or myself through that again. It was VERY traumatic for both of us. It took them over an hour of holding my baby down as she screamed until she couldn't breath to get an IV in(she has bad veins like me). To watch my child suffer like that at 6 days old was so hard for me. I wanted to beat the living day lights out of the Dr. who had NO medical reason for doing it. It was just standard! Now if I knew she had a sever reaction to milk then I may have gone with option #1 but b/c she has never shown a "true" allergy I figured it would be a lot easier to go with #2.

why is it the 'norm' for them to put our reflux babies on soy or lactose free formulas?? Jaxon never really showed any of the signs of milk allergy either but he is on soy formula not to admit to being naughty but we ran out of soy formula at like 1 am and he was screaming so i gave him his normal formula that i had left over and he was fine plus he helped himself to my pizza and didnt have any problems. I too would have picked option 2

They put them on what they think is easiest to digest. The less time in the tummy the less time for it to come back up. Plus some reflux symptoms are the same as milk/soy allergies. So they want to rule out the allergy first before diagnosing reflux but with Nevy we were never 100% sure b/c she did get diarrhea with the soy formula. (I have posted some great tips and stuff for reflux here. If anyone wants to look)

Oh that is a tough one. Option #1 more accurate, but oh so miserable. Option #2 takes longer, harder to be 100% accurate, but no needle.
Yikes I don't know what I would do. Before Sunday I would have said #1, but after what happened on Sunday I would probably go with #2.
