My son broke his thumb...
Saturday he came back from his friend's house where he had been playing soccer and the ball hit his right thumb and dislocated it so we left at 8h00pm, the doc gave him 3 shots in his thumb to numb itand started pulling and tugging on it, he said that he's had less problems replacing a dislocated thigh... he had a hard time putting it back, the put it in a kinda cast and sent us off to ex-ray it wasn't broken but badly hurt, so he's in that thing for about a week and then we get to take it off and see how it is.... So his soccer team wil be missing him for a few weeks. I should of taken a pic of his thumb is was really difformed not very nice to lookt. So this morning he's not bad i gave him so tylenol and he should be ok...Poor thing when i took him to he hospital last night he thought he was going in there to die he was crying lol... then this morning i got a phone call from the hospital We have to go to the hospital tomorrow, we need to go to orthopedics they rechechek the x-ray and found that his thumb was broken after all... now he needs a cast can someone tell me how come they recheck a x-ray i thought they just filed them and that was it....I'm happy they found it though but it will be a pain with the heat of the summer and our vacation coming...I'll tell you how it goes 2morrow. Now i need to vent how dumb is that that they did not see it the first time and now they saw it.... Man i'm mad.

I understand why you are mad I would be extremely ticked off. I wish I knew why they did that but I don’t have you confronted them and asked them why they rechecked it? I will be praying for your son give him a HUGE hug for me. Please keep us updated and let us know how he is doing.

Happens all the time. Sometimes, it takes a new set of eyes on the x-rays.
My brother walked around for a week on a broken leg.

Oh my goodness how awful! I have dislocated my elbow a time or six! I know the pain he was experiencing and it is NOT fun!
As to why they double check XRays. My friend works in an ER. There are several things that can occur. An attending might not be a regular at the hospital, so someone who is regularly at the hospital is to check up on everything. Also, often when you are in the ER they are in such a hurry to move from patient to patient, that they give the XRAY a good quick look and see nothing wrong and send you on your way. Later, when things settle down, they will recheck the XRays. Also - someone filing the Xrays as you mentioned, could have noticed it, or it can be so faint and so hard to see, that it can sometimes be overlooked even when the most thorough of doctors looks at it.
Regardless, I hope he is feeling better and that everything goes alright tomorrow. I've been in casts for many a summer vacation and it is NOT fun. I really hope all goes smoothly for you!

Yep- exactly true. This past Canada Day (Jul 1st) my fiance fell in a park in downtown Ottawa (which was pandemonium) and because the streets were blocked off, we had to be brought via ambulance to the hospital. The diagnosis at the time was a really bad sprain (they took x-rays). Well, last Saturday after his ankle was still swollen he went back to the hospital- turns out it was broken all along and he is now in a walking air cast.
Ditto to what scrapbookguru said as well- my fiance is actually an RN, and says it happens fairly often with smaller fractures. Part of the issue as well is that often right after it happens it can be hard to do a proper evaluation because it's so painful.
Hope your little guy recovers quickly!

So sorry for your little guy! That's no fun!
If it is any comfort Mom to Mom.....been there, done that.
DS#1 got his thumb broken during a soccer game at recess in grade school
and in high school PE class during basketball.
Yes, sometimes those hairline cracks or breaks do not show up until read
the following day by the radiologist. That's his/her job as an MD to recheck
every xray.
Issue: the growth plate in a bone. We had to take DS#1 to the orthopedic specialist
because they were worried the cracks were near the growth plate in a bone.
That means, the rest of his hand would grow, but the thumb would stay the same size.
DS#1's injured thumb is slightly smaller....years later, but fully functional.
********
These too will come to your door, so be prepared now.
Mom's List of Injuries For Sons:
Broken Bones
Stitches
Butterfly steristrips for opened areas that do not need stitches.
Sprained Ankles
Sprained Arms
Tooth knocked out (at least it was a baby tooth)
Black Eyes.
Our pediatrician always told us.......don't worry, this is the 1st for your son,
he is in sports, so there will be more to come.

((((Hugs)))
