Question Need ideas for a cheap garden, and making space for it

My almost 2 year old dd has had alot of speech problems, but amazingly she broke through that to say the word "fows" (flowers). She especially loves yellow ones.

So this summer I want to plant some flowers in a little garden out front. But there's a problem. I rent and the only spot I can use for a garden is where the dead bush is, which means tearing it up. Furthermore, the spot sits right under a pine tree. Which means needles.

I am on goverment assistance and am paying for school, AND i don't get child support. So needless, to say, money is tight.

Ok, so let the ideas roll out! Something cheap, but where I can plant enough flowers that she can pick a few everyday during summer.

TIA!

Get pots Jean...plant marigolds...the BIG ones. They are beautiful and very hardy little plants. They also re-seed themselves and the cats hate the smell of them

Just to add...if she really loves yellow flowers...if you see any dandelions...have her pick them It gets rid of them but lets her have some fun!

What a beautiful story! How about daffodil bulbs, if you can get them. They grow well in large pots.Planted in the autumn, to bloom in spring.

I loved picking wild flowers when I was a child. A great idea if you live in the countryside, or can take day trips to an area where wild flowers grow. I am getting all nostalgic now

Impatiens are excellent for growing in the shade, and once they get going they actually grow better if you pick a few each day . They are also pretty inexpensive, usually about $5 for a dozen plants or so. They come in a wide variety of colors, you might be able to find some yellow ones.

Impatiens also need lots of water, more than most flowering annuals. If you decide to plant some it might be fun to get your little girl a small watering pot and let her water them every day.

Yes she does love those dandelions. We were searching desperately for some today, but I think she picked every one within a mile radius ( ok thats exaggerating)! That's what made me want to plant a garden. Have her help me...LOVE the idea of her getting a watering can.

Thanks!

How fun! You could always get some cheap seeds.....I have seen them for 10 cents a package. You can plant them in any kinds of pots - even large tin cans (be careful of sharp edges).

Marigolds are ever blooming and very pretty. They make me sneeze though.

a little garden will be so cute for her! target has a ton of kids' gardening tools right now. most that i saw were 99 cents & in the toy section, but there was also an aisle near the gardening stuff and i'm sure the dollar section has a ton too. post pictures when you get the garden together!

You can use an old egg carton fill the empty spots with dirt and plant seeds (usually about 10 cents each), they grow fast and cheap. Also, if you can use buckets from the dollar store and fill them with dirt to add to your garden and its space. Happy planting!

There are varieties of tomato seeds that can be grown in planters for a compact vine. The plants are also very decorative and you'll have enough tomatoes for the whole season. If you happen to move, the plants can be carted away with you.

If you have just a couple of feet of space you can put some sticks up, tie them together, and plant climbing green beans.

Both the green beans and tomatoes need full sun if you have that someplace.
