Default Need to break a habit

My son's birthday is coming up and he is going to be 9, Every year we have always made sure the other one had a gift also. I would like to stop this giving a gift everytime the other one gets something. But I don't know how. I don't want to hurt the other ones feelings since I have started doing this since birth. I know I brought this on myself but now the gifts are very expensive a skateboard is $170 to give you an idea of where my boys are at on wanting things. They are so close in age and do everything together now. Should I just keep buying them gifts on the other ones birthday or stop it now before I end up buying two cars in one year.
