Default Nervous habits

My 5-year-old son has some very nervous habits. We have suspected that he may have hyperactivity or OCD. I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced some of his behaviors and, if so, what is your opinion on treatment?

Apart from being very active (running, jumping, flailing, rowdiness, etc.), he has some rather frightening habits. He picks his fingers and toes until they bleed.

We ask him why he does this, and he can't answer. We have admonished him about these habits, threatening trips to the doctor to treat him. It doesn't matter.

Any ideas?

Make an appointment to go to the doctor....also dont threaten him with going to the doctor. It'll only make him fear health professionals...something he shouldn't.

Take a list of the behaviors to your doctor and also ask the school (if he's at school) about any behaviors they have noticed. Good luck.

The picking is pretty indicative of OCD. But it could be something else.

Best thing is to have him evaluated - make it be a helpful thing, not "if you don't stop this we're gonna ask the doctor". More like "We're going to ask the doctor to help you not to bleed on your fingers".

Best to catch it now.

My nephew, who is 13, has severe ADHD. We all went to Disney world and my sister in law forgot his meds at home. We lost him in the park so many times. It was horrible! He has this thing where he licks his fingers over and over. It's like a tick or something. I teach school and haven't ever seen a case like his. Maybe there are cases of ADHD where they have nervous ticks like this.

Something is going on and best take him to the doctor, as stated before.

Never threaten to take him to the doctor. The doctors and nurses are there to help and heal.

Let us know how things progress.
