Default Nigerian Teacher's death

Regarding the news story quoted by some non-Muslim posters in this forum about the Christian teacher who was beaten to death by her students, there is more context to this story than what was reported in the Christian press. The incident was part of the overall political/religious unrest in Nigeria spurred on by the Danish cartoon debaucle. The history of violence of both sides of the largely Christian Nigerian population in the South of the country and the largely Muslim Northern part of the country has been cooking for decades. It is said to be mainly about politics and tribal differences, fueled by religious zeal. This New York Times article gives a good overall picture of the entire conflict in context, it includes the incident of the Christian teacher. I urge everyone who participated in or read the discussion in the previous thread entitled The Survival of our Relationship to read this news article by a respected American news source.

Not everything boils down to the savage Muslims killing the innocent Christians. Often times the violence is tribal and complicated by many factors, particularly in parts of Africa where the people are still struggling to emerge from European colonialism. If we only look at our own country's history toward minorities in very recent times I think we can begin to realize that many of these countries have had independence for just a handful of decades and they have much work to do in order to restore just societies where everyone gets along peacefully.

Is the story that the poster in the other thread was referring to? Because this article is from two years ago.

This article I found has the story about the teacher in it.

Personally I believe that no one has the right to kill anyone over religion. As in Muslim mom's link. Those 'Christian's" or those who called themselves Christian did not have the right to kill or hurt those people. It angers me that they used their religious beliefs to justify the killing of anyone. It is against all the Christian teachings.

The 2nd article about the killing of a teacher....I was so saddened to read that whole story. It breaks my heart. Her religion did not matter. No one has the right to kill anyone over religion. I just feel sad that there was not a more peace full was to resolve this.

I think that until both Muslims and Christians stop using their religion, (which from what Muslim mom has said..that Muslims are peaceful ), to hurt each other this circle will continue. I can only hope that Christians everywhere can know that Muslims are a peaceful people. Just like Christians.

I love that this forum allows us to express each others opinions and that Families accepts all religions and beliefs. We are a vast forum that accepts each other no matter what religion they are from. I can only hope that in Real Life this can happen as well.

Both stories are from the same time period, maybe a couple months apart.

The thing to realize is that much of what you read is politically motivated, not religiously motivated. Also, I'd like to point out that the Nigerian teacher story is from the Christian religious press and very sensationalized, just as some Islamic news outlets are biased in the other direction. I'm not marginalized what happened to her or justifying it any way, but some of the story is definitely worded to inspire anger and outrage – I would not call it unbiased reporting by any stretch of the imagination, just as I would not call much of Arabic Al Jazeerah news unbiased. This is an important point for all people to take note.

I agree Lessly, for anyone to kill in the name of religion is really sad, and does nothing to help resolve the conflicts. I wish everyone could be peaceful but I guess as long as there are differing opinions, whether they are religious political or tribe, there will never be peace. Maybe here we can find a peaceful middle ground.
