Default Nursing School and Work

Hi to everyone. I am new to your site. As a nursing student and a Mom I am very busy right now. I graduate in June so the end is in sight. My problem is that my husband really wants me to work. I work over the summers and last year I worked every single weekend. This year is the busiest yet with school, I just finished doing 9 hour clinicals every Saturday and Sunday. I am really tired of weekends and I know I will still have to do this when I am a nurse. To avoid this I have tried scheduling wook after lecture during the week but this just means I have very long days. I am also missing time that I could be studying or spending time with the family.
I know there are people who do it but I just can't seem to figure out a way to be a Mom a nursing student and work. If you have done this let me know.

My SIL did it. . .but she graduated before she had kids I think. She was exhausted and took the night shift for several years to get her foot in the door into the slot that she wanted. It was really hard for her. No words of wisdom but I have empathy for you!

If you can get by without the money by scrimping and saving or changing some habits, men in general seem to respond well to this by actually physically seeing the numbers play out on paper; if that helps. But I know with my SIL the issues was as much finances as it was just keeping her foot in the door and her clinical skills up.

I did both...I was a single mum going to nrsg school and working. It is hard but you can do it I found that I only worked p/t and around my schedule. I can understand...I hated leaving my oldest (who was 1 at the time) in daycare. If your Dh is worried about $ why not try to work just 4 hr shifts? One a week-end should get you some work. Besides...if you work now you'll have more senority then those in your class that are not working. In the end an employers may hire you over any of them

I'm not a nursing student, but I am a working student. I agree it's very tough...at one point I worked as a cashier because you have to have flexibility with your work schedule around school. School should be your priority. I've worked as little as 16/hours a week (recently) and as much as 30/hours a week, depending on how my college load was each particular semester.

it is exhausting. I don't think there's anything tougher. Your dh better be picking up the slack at home, or he doesn't get a say, imo.

i am a nurse, and nursing school was hard, and i dont have kids! i worked a lot up until my last semester, but that last semester is very rough. what i did was take out a loan through a credit union. it wasnt much, just enough to get me through those last few months. i have been out of school and working for 3.5 years now and my loan was paid off at the start of the year (2007). it worked for me, and i felt much less stressed out knowing that i didnt really need to work, because i had enough to get by until i graduated. no matter what you decide to do, getting your degree will be worth it!

it can be tempting to squeeze everything in from studies, work and family time. but never take your health for granted as overworking one's self can lead to further problems down the road if one's health fails.

Do you need the money? I didn't work at university, there was a strict no employment policy. Do you have a student loan? Do you qualify for a pell grant?
