Default Obama lifts ban on stem cell research

President Obama lifted the ban on federally funded stem cell research today, allowing Federally funded researchers to use stem cells from destroyed embryos, not just the 21 lines already in existence.

There is also a presidential memorandum which directs the federal government to allow laws governing science to be made on the basis of research and not political ideology. The exact wording is not clear yet.

What do you think?

I heard this on the radio today and was wondering if someone was going to post about it. I do like the idea of stem cell research but I don't "like" the idea of using embryos. From what I understand they can only use embryos that were going to be destroyed anyway. They can't create embryos for the use of research. If the embryos are going to be destroyed anyway why not put them to good use with research. And with diabetes and Parkinsons that runs in the family I would love to find a cure!

I didn't know there was a possible help for diabetes this way. I was aware of Parkinsons and various problems with nerve cells.

Wonder if Christopher Reeve and his wife are smiling down from heaven today...

What if they discover a cure for one of these diseases that can only be made with embryonic stem cells? Are we going to start making babies to kill them for the new medicine?

I think this whole thing is disgusting. It's de-valuing human life under the disguise of valuing it.

This is for using discarded embryos - and specifically prohibits them being created for use of research.

Raises new ethical questions on abortion practices for sure. But.....

Kind of nice to know that your miscarried embryo is more than a "product of conception" and that there's a possibility that some good may come of the pain.

Think this is the last thing he should be worrying about. I think we should be focusing on the crappy economy and not lifting bans.
I, too, find it disgusting.

Would the parents of the m/c embroyo have the option of donation? Or would it just be done? I surely wouldn't have wanted mine to have gone to that route.

A lot of vaccinations contain materials from embryo's anyway, it is similar to organ donation, if someone goes through the hurt of death I don't know how they can deny someone else life.

Because it's not the same at all as organ donation, Samual. Organ donation is giving REAL hope(assuming the organ takes) for life to someone else.
Research is just that- using my dead baby for a lab rat- No thanks!

Well, it's a whole other debate that would step on toes around here, but personally I don't believe in test-tube embryos in the first place.

That being said, once they are created, I honestly don't think they should be destroyed. Maybe that's not realistic, but that's a life that's being destroyed, albeit in an early stage.
