I didn’t listen to the whole thing, personally I don’t care for the song, but it doesn’t really offend me. I do think the teacher could have used another technique to teach the children about the president other than a song. I think the teacher needs a little guidance on more appropriate techniques.
The President of the United States should be respected. Does that mean we have to agree with him, no. When things like this happen is the best time to explain to our children why we agree or why we don’t with this person or group of people. Our children are going to encounter situations like this all the time. We need to teach them how to responsibly deal with people who don’t have the same views as us. I do think too many things are left out of public schools b/c we are so afraid of offending someone. As parents we need to take active roles in teaching our children.
A teacher teaching student’s one belief over another is wrong. But I do think stating the facts are appropriate. Sometimes this is hard especially when the teacher has a strong opinion on the subject. And children are always going to ask “why”. And as a teacher how do you respond?
When I was in Junior High it was during an election year. We followed the election and had our own debates. We even had our own election. It was great.
