Default OK Now I KNOW I am living in the 21st Century...

There is going to be a Moon Rush.

Google has sponsored a $30 million prize to the company which can successfully develop a means to get to the moon and explore it. It's like a private space race.

I think this is neat. The moon is an untapped resource for minerals and climate for experimentation, which can bring us many benefits. Best of all, greenhouse gasses on the moon don't matter, as there is no atmosphere, no biosphere - it all goes into space.

Mining raw materials for use on earth is one commercial use that comes to mind. Also using the Moon for launching spacecraft and exploration. And setting up observatories. No light pollution there!

What do you think? Is this moonpie in the sky, or a good thing for earth?

I'm all for the space race but the moon isn't owned by any particular country/person....how could a company take resources that don't belong to them?

They stake a claim. They do the research and provide the materials to do what they need. And at this point, it is all research and exploration anyway. I am way more comfortable with private initiatives on this than government.

And it looks like Canadians and folks in the UK will lead the way.....

You are funny!

Wii got a Wii this week too!
I am certain the Japanese
will develop a game so that
you feel weightless like you are actually on the moon.

********

Isn't the moon full of cheese?

I didn't realize there was anything to to mine like gold, silver, diamonds, etc.

I'm frankly appalled and think we need to stop ruining this planet before we move on to other places to destroy. Just because there's no atmosphere or biosphere doesn't mean doing things won't cause damage. First cardinal rule in environmental science, you CANNOT do just one thing. Whatever you do has an impact somewhere else. It just may not be as obvious at first.

I think this is very dangerous ground. My environmental science class that I took just because it was an elective that happened to fit in with my required courses has been the single most life changing class I've ever taken. I'm so much more aware of how we impact everything around us. It was a real awakening for me.
