Default Old house--New House?

We have been looking for our LAST home. We have spent the past year just looking.... A few months ago we found a Dream home that was NEW and the owner had run out of money to finish the custom build.... We made our offer a day late and a dollar short and didn't get this house
So we left that deal thinking maybe we will just build our own home....But, we continue to look.
Anyway, last weekend we saw a beautiful home...Actually it is a Named 100 year old Mansion on the Historical List! A victorian which has been remodled and is quit the house to say the least--much bigger then we really need but with charme and things that make you feel that this would be one swell place to plant roots.
So now we are torn....Do we spend the same money and find a lot and build a one level home that is exactly what we think we want to live the rest of our lives in--Or do we get the 100 year old mansion because it is a fantasy house and will look awesome on the holidays....?????
I would love to hear from people who have built a custom home and from people who have purchased an historical home and what the pittfalls and joys of each have been... This is such a difficult choice to make.....
