Question ? on ranitidine/Zantac

Have any of you other reflux mommies had ranitidine/Zantac lose effectiveness over time? [I know this can happen, just looking for input/comparisons]-- and how long was your baby taking it before the effectiveness started wearing down?

Damian's been taking it since he was diagnosed @7wks (he's now over 16wks), but despite increasing his dosage, he seems to be reverting more towards the cranky, miserable behavior we experienced before his diagnosis. The past few days in particular he's been generally whiny and cranky, and not even sleeping well like he had been... he can't stay down for a full nap, and his usual 5hr stretch at night is getting shorter and shorter. I've also noticed more spitting up, more fuss when he spits up, and a LOT more hiccups.

As you might imagine, I'm very much looking forward to his pedi appt on Monday!!!

This was our EXACT problem with the zantac!! well, we had the generic ranti whatever stuff too, but same thing...

Kaydee was put on it about 10 weeks or so, was GREAT for about 2 weeks, then went back to not being so great...it would work on and offf....at about 4 months I wanted her switched to Prevacid, but instead the GI dr. just upped her dose...once again it worked great for a few days, then just started to decline again. At 5 1/2 months she was FINALLY put on Prevacid, and now she only spits up when she overeats or is played w/ too much following a bottle..

I would fight for the Prevacid and DONT take no for an answer like I did...its not fair for the baby or you!!

GL!!

Zantac worked with Nevy for about 3 weeks and the Axid (a stronger type of zantac) worked for about a week. Yes it does stop working after awhile. Thats why I love Prevacid so much! Nevys been on it since about 3-4 months old and it still works just as good as the first day she started to use it. I would ask to see a Ped. G.I. to see if you could get him on Prevacid. Good luck & if you have any more?'s I'd be HTH.

Tried to respond earlier, but... heh. Y'know that sudden wail (the "Mommy-I'm-miserable" cry) that wakes them all of a sudden in the middle of a nap...? -- Yup. Had to abandon my response and walk/rock/nurse. Poor munchkin.

Anyhow, thanks for the responses ladies... I'll definitely be asking about prevacid or something similar on Monday. Let me tell you, I've noticed so many of his symptoms intensifying again lately... He's all snuffly and hoarse, but doesn't have a cold; the crankiness, spitting up and hiccups like I mentioned; a LOT of arching his back; he's even had (sorry, TMI) milk come out his nose a few times... sooo not right for a wee little thing to go through all of this!

Ahh yes the good old milk out the nose. How I dont miss those days! Nevys would shot out her nose and her mouth at the same time !

Yes it is not approved for children under one BUT its been used on this age group for the last 20 years and has been proven safe. The main reason the FDA wont approve it is b/c its in a tablet and for it to be safe for infants it needs to come in a liquid but Prevacid isn't as effective in a liquid. So the company wont make it as a liquid. It makes no sense to me b/c you can dissolve the tablet yourself in a little water. The FDA just likes to be a pain in the you know what!
